    USB Charger in Center Console

I've noticed that the USB port (not media) in the center console doesn't charge my phone nearly as fast as when I use my regular cigarette lighter charger. I think the cig charger is rated as a 1A or 2A fast charger (Android). I assume the Ram USB port is lower.

Anyone know if there's a converter to pull out the USB port and replace it with a traditional cigarette lighter? I'd like to just have the cable running out of the console than having to plug in my charger.

    Thanks!

Mine has died completely. However I dread taking it to the dealer for this issue.

I would love to have a more reliable and faster charging replacement.

If it's that important of an issue, install a dedicated line.

Make a fused power wire and ground off the battery, through that rubber boot in the firewall next to the steering. Run that to anyplace you want to build in a lighter plug. Amperage limited by your wire size, fuse and plug system.

personally, I think the location of the USB ports wasn't well thought out. Having a cord come out of the top console box and down into the center console is awkward. I have been thinking of adding a USB port just under where the phone cradle is.

I have to say that I'm fine with all the ports, cup holders, etc. as my 2001 Dakota only had 1 cup holder and it was nearly useless as it was next to the shifter. I guess they thought you would never have a passenger :-).

The USB port charges and also accepts data, Pandora or a phones music on memory, I prefer to turn the lighter socket into a USB charger, plugging the phone in to the console USB screws with the 8.4 system and needs readjustment every start.

Maybe not all the trucks have two USB ports in the upper center console, the one you are referring to is connected to the 8.4 radio. The one the OP is referring to is just a USB charging port and is a low current charge port that is not connected to the radio.

that plug is in use - it has my Garmin plugged into it. IMHO, they need more power ports/USB outlets and as I mentioned, one closer to the phone rack.

Ah, I see, I only have one USB port, lesson learned.
