    RPM sweet spot, mileage, towing

Just been researching over old posts about rpm. Didn't quite find what I was looking for though. Basically what rpm do you guys think is the sweet spot on the highway unloaded? I would ask speed but with different set ups i think rpm is a way to go. Also, around town what rpm do you try to keep your truck at? low rpm, high rpm, let the truck do its thing and don't care.
Coming from a CTD, I always read a low rpm to help milage, but with the ED, how low is too low till you are lugging and just filling up soot levels. Ive been trying to keep rpm low when possible but I'm thinking now that if I can drive around town at about 1800-2000 rpm that would be better for the truck and in town mileage.Highway is a different ball game and I think with my truck being 3.92, I'm feeling 105km/h is the best speed for mileage and doesn't feel like a turtle too much. Of course guys will say just drive the damn thing and who cares, I'm just having a coffee this morning check stuff out and figured Id throw something up for discussion.

45-65mph is what i have found to be my best mpg with 3.92's in mine. I stay lower on the rpm side personally but the truck has pretty high shift points as it is a higher rpm design diesel. 16-1800rpm is best for me but obviously your terrain may differ. MPG dives above 65 pretty quickly, although it is quite good still for being a big truck. In town you kinda have to let it shuffle through on its own since it shifts so high you'll just be fighting yourself IMO.

I have 3.55 gears. I think a lot depends on the terrain. I think 1500+ rpm is good and id say up to 1750 rpm. In 8th gear that covers from about 55-70 mph for me. If I'm cruising relatively level to rolling ground in a lower gear/speed I try to keep it at 1500 or a hair over. If it is in really hilly terrain a lot of times I will put tow haul mode on.

What are you averaging with the 3.92s? I've found mine to be somewhere around 23-25 per tank (I don't calculate short trips) and was just curious what other's are getting with the 3.92s.

    Thanks!

Well I have had my GDE tune with my 3.92 truck for awhile now I average about 22 around town. On the highway if I do 70 I get around 28-30 pending. I did get 29 coming back from North Carolina to Illinois going 75. Wind plays a huge deal. On the way down to North Carolina I hit a huge head wind and couldn't get over 25mpg going 70. It does vary a lot.

1,800 +- rpm is ideal for this motor.

There was at one time much discussion about 1,500 rpm or lower under cruise as being a bit too low and near "lugging" the motor. That can reduce oil pump operation and might not be good for the engine. Not sure if that's true but I would avoid putting the engine under load below 1,500 rpm. Mostly the transmission downshifts anyhow but some creative ones figure out ways to delay that downshift.

Like captain said 1500 is low, when I say 1500 I'm saying when conditions allow, these trucks don't make a lot of power at 1500 rpm so if your loaded or climbing 1500 likely wont make it without lugging.

For towing at hwy speeds I like the 2000-2250 range quite a bit.

I can be in the 26-28 range pretty easily on a interstate/hwy route which i'm happy with due to my bumper/accessories. Mainly thats my wifes drive though as i work close enough most of the time that i can just ride my bike which gets even better mpg but isn't as good for towing. MPG is around 20 or less in town since its just stop and go in the chicago suburbs.

I find it 1650 to 1800 RPM it is about ideal
I pull trailers every day ranging from 3000 pounds to 10,000 on average
my new dump trailer is 7 feet tall and from 3500 pound to 7000 pounds at 60 miles an hour I'll get about 15 to 16 miles per us gallon
Should hit 140,000 km this weekend on my 2016 yep and you guessed it with original fuel filter -wink-

back to topic-I would stay away from RPMs below 1600 as it does not seem to be ideal for power and possibly lower oil pressure

I have the GDE Tune. 3.92 gears I get 21 in town. Almost all 35-45 stop and start. Towing 30 ft Airstream 55-70 14-16MPG based upon hills and wind. Could not be happier.
