Towed a 26' camper of the same brand as OP in the hills/mountains of MT, don't know the exact specs of the trailer as far as weight is concerned, usually loaded up with food/fishing gear too, hand calculated at 9-11mpg, not tuned or anything other than slightly larger than stock tires cause the factory 4 plies didn't seem to stay inflated when used on gravel roads, put an edge CTS in to adjust tire size and monitor other things. Seems like for a 32' pull behind 9 mpg isn't terrible keep the speed down and try out some of the suggestions on here and what works best for you and enjoy the drive.Remember that you're going into states that have low temperatures, therefore fuel is likely to be blended for winter temps, and odds are worse economy can surely be expected

yeah, blended fuel sucks for economy, but usually it's a fair trade off cause nobody likes a gelled up diesel

Allow yourself plenty of time. With that load and your truck set up you will likely be going up some of the grades in 4th at 45 ish. My truck would do it in 5th at 55 ish. Just Keep it down to 3,000 up long grades to avoid de-rate. Please also at least consider getting a WDH it will be a safer more enjoyable tow.

EDIT. While in Cali you can get Propel which is IMO a superior diesel. You pick up power, mileage, & it's far cleaner. They have a free app for your phone that has info & a locator that works with your phone GPS. If you run that the length of Cali you will be a believer. I buy it every opportunity I get.

We recently towed a 7000 lb airstream and achieved 15.9 mpg on I75 in SW florida. The Green engine tune could help, maybe lighter trailer would also be consideration

Summer of 2015 I did a round trip from SC to FL to CA and back pulling a 24' enclosed car trailer that checked in around 8000 lbs. We managed a hand calc 14.7 mpg for the entire trip. I never used cruise and diligently worked the loud pedal to keep tranny in 8th as much as possible, never lower than 7th except up those western grades which are a wee bit more than the stuff on this side of the country. Having done a lot of towing with mine, keeping it up in 8th as much as possible makes a huge difference. Budget has yet to allow the GDE tune but it will come. Since the most recent refresh of the ECU at the dealer, my mileage has dropped a bit in normal running and perhaps in towing as well. But the last long tow to/from SD was an express run with the open trailer at something north of most limits and right at the tire speed ratings.

Speaking of tires, as a tire nerd, such things always worry me. Make sure you know what your rig really weighs fully loaded and those rubber doughnuts have the right cold inflation pressure to cover your loads. My enclosed trailer weighed 1150 lbs more empty than quoted by selling dealer or placard on it. The RV industry has gotten a lot more accurate on such things but you really must run across scales and confirm things, especially for your long trek.

Go at a reasonable pace and enjoy the ride. The 2 cross country trips I did in 2015 were great fun, I just wished that I'd had more time to explore along the way.

    Cheers

A great trailer tire is Maxxis Maxxis ST Radial Trailer Tires | Maxxis Tires USA

They are offered in E load range and can run at higher speeds without coming apart. Also get a good WDH and I like my TLC air bags with the wireless one system that is key fob activated and it all makes for a smooth set up when pulling a trailer. The GDE tune and brake also add extra help in a smoother tow, and the GDE wakes up the motor when your not towing.

Wow, I pulled my 4000 lb boat, 5 men and camping gear for all and got 16.5 mpg over an 800 mile round trip and I was doing 75 mph whenever possible.

Boats don't have anywhere near the wind drag that a travel trailer has. Wind resistance is the killer... I replaced a TT with one 50% heavier and only lost 1/2 mpg.
