Towed my 7500lb camper. 9mpg? Am I doing something wrong?

I'm looking for some input from all you knowledgeable guys. I have owned my 2015 bighorn ED for right at a year now and I have loved this truck more than any vehicle I have ever owned. My issue is I have been working in Lake Charles La for 4 years now and I have a 32 foot tag along that I've been living in. I will now be relocated to Oregon a good 3000 Miles trip and I just pulled it back to my house for the first time and was pulling only 9 miles per gallon. am I doing something wrong? Trailer weights 7400 dry figure 1000lbs worth of junk in it so 8400 maybe. I have read all the great stories of 13 and 14 pulling even heavier loads than this. So now I'm a bit concerned about pulling in the mountains of northern California and Oregon. Any help would be appreciated.

Head wind? How fast? What kind of mileage you get empty?

Was this over a full tank or just a short trip? Going off a hand calc or the EVIC reading?

There's a few blanks to fill in still, but at a steady cruise, I'd think at that speed you'd be seeing at least 12mpg.

That was at a steady speed on I-10 for about a hundred miles pulling a steady 9 miles per gallon on the Evac I really did think I would get at least 12

I saw 13-14 towing 3000 less pounds than you. I'm guessing you might see it go up to 11 or 12mpg if you keep it at 55-60 mph. That's a big trailer for an EcoD regardless of what some others have claimed to tow with ease.

I have a 4700lb loaded bumper pull that I get 10 mpg to 13mpg, but mostly 10.somrthing mpg at 65mph on the highway. I once got 19mpg heading east from El Paso with no wind...... I have 3800lbs on the axles of the trailer and 900lbs on the hitch (dual batteries in metal box and large lp tanks). That's about the same mpg I got pulling with my Liberty CRD at 57 mph.
Much more relaxed towing with the Ram, but it's still pulling a large air brake because of trailer frontal area.

I would check wheel bearings and brakes on the trailer. Nobody has ever reported mileage that bad. I got 13.5 average with 7500 or so 30' TT

Edit: Your trailer is bigger than I thought.... 8500 with flat front and quite long. I would slow down some, and calculate mileage based on a full tank of fuel. Short intervals are not really sufficient to evaluate fuel economy, IMO. And you haven't been to the scales, as you are guessing at the weight of the stuff in the trailer. I would get it to the scales to ensure your WDH is setup correctly, and to find out just how much you're pulling.
All opinions are my own, and always speckled with sarcastic humor... please do not take offense.
