    New tires, decrease in milage?

    Hi floks,

I replaced the stock tires with a set of stock size Firestone Destination LE2s. I went from an average of 27mpg on the highway to 24. WTH? Other than that, these are excellent tires. Smooth, quiet and have great wet and dry feel.

Better than a 10% drop in mpg's seems extreme to be just a set of tire replacements.

When I changed to Destinations there was no change in fuel mileage. Now I do not know what LE2 means and am too lazy to find out. If it's one of those all-around tread patterns there will be more resistance and wear with highway driving.

Mine are street/road tread. One blew apart when something hit it at 3,000 miles and got trashed. I had to pay for a replacement. Now I see that at about 18,000 they are showing more wear than I like to see. Looks like an expensive lesson that I should have known.

Michelin is the answer for long tire life and low rolling resistance.

Just looking at them they look like they should be great. How much air pressure are you running.

You will always see a drop in mileage on a brand new set of tires vs.old worn out ones. Because of the taller/deeper tread will slightly throw off the mileage meter and new squishy rubber needs a bit of time to break-in and fully set. /work harden before rolling resistance gets better. Give them some time and by the 3rd tank of fuel on the new tires you should start noticing a slow & steady increase in mileage. Especially that the difference in tread, weight, and rolling resistance between the stock Goodyear and LE 2's are not that substantial, as they are both smooth running highway treads.

Had to look. The LE2's are what I have. They are the street tires.

Oh well, so much for my idea. Red_Ram wins with his idea maybe.

Good luck with them. I am not happy with mine. Soon leaving for a western tow and trip. Doubt they will much get past this trip, they seem to be wearing so fast. Much of my driving includes some form of towing so maybe it's just an anomaly of my driving patterns. Hope you do not experience the same.

If you got them from Discount Tire, they'll take them back. This happened on a Titan I had. My crappy MPG went south by 3 more MPG. I went back to Discount to see what they could do and they refunded my money on the spot and put me in more fuel efficient tires that were cheaper.
