2007-2008 Grand Cherokee Diesel 3.0L CRD Engine

Okay, if this isn't in the right area, please move/delete. My 2016 Ram Ecodiesel is hopelessly broken and FCA is buying it back. But I am not ready to give up on diesel yet. I found a 2008 Grand Cherokee with the CRD diesel engine at a local dealership. Asking price is $6K and it has 131K miles. Can anybody comment on this engine/drive-train? Is it reliable? Is there anything I should be looking out for?

While the HP, torque and fuel economy ratings aren't exactly inspiring, I just need something that can tow and is reliable.

Maybe look at getting another EcoDiesel or a gas half ton

If its a modern diesel with EGR DPF SCR etc. older and higher miles is not the direction you want to go if you want reliability.

The 5.9 Cummins up to about 2008 would be something to consider as they were pre-emissions. My guess on the best years would be the 2003-2008 models. Sometime later in 2008 they started emissions and then went to the 6.7 creature with emissions they used up until 2019 when it changed again.

As for that Jeep engine, some spoke well of them but I personally only remember general comments. Not a whole lot were sold so do not know much about parts and supply today either.

What is it that you are after about the diesel?

I cant argue I like them for the capability and fuel economy that they offer. That said their are other options that would absolutely do whatever I needed.

I am curious to know what kind of mileage I could coax out of a 2.7 liter ecoboost or GM's new 2.7 liter turbo 4 cylinder.

With the complexity and complications of diesel emissions systems and fuel injection systems I would encourage you to buy a gas powered vehicle unless you have big want for diesel. In that case I would still recommend you buy a gas and get over it.

The captain is correct, other than it being 2007.5 half model year change. So a 2007 could be either the 6.7 or 5.9. The newer trucks with SCR are actually a lot more reliable than the 2007-2012 trucks without SCR, and the mileage was atrocious with the lack of SCR on the emissions system.
I’d say stick with a newer gas engine that’s turbo’d or get another EcoDiesel or the little powerstroke if diesel is the only option.

I had a 2008 GC CRD and it was an awesome vehicle. The 5 speed auto limits its MPG ability and the only real issues were from the intake flaps fouling up.

It is based on the pre bluetec MB so it has DPF but no SCR.

I owned mine from 14K kms to 144K kms with the only issue being a bad level sensor for the HID headlights and a shift transfer case motor recall. I wish I had kept it. It was a limited S.

Truck is pretty much bullet proof and if you have the QuadraDriveII it has e diffs center front and rear so in 4low it is basically fully locked up. Thing was a tank.
