    DEF Injector plugging

I have had to replace two DEF injectors in two years due to plugging. The truck sits for 3 months in a garage in AZ in the summer. When I run it after storage the injector has been plugged each time. Dealer said there are two fixes: take it out and hammer it like it was a rental to clear the fluid from the tip of the injector or run the DEF reservoir down to low level before storage. Neither seemed like the right answer. Suggestions?

I don't see how level of def in tank would affect nozzel, can't you just soak the nozzle to clean it rather than replace it.

Possibly add some deionized or distilled water to the def tank to try and clean it.

Get GDE. Then use distilled water instead of DEF.

If not, take it out and rinse the darn thing off to dissolve the white deposits.

If you're not able to take the injector out, most repair garages could remove it and clean it. As long as you tell them that is what you want to do.
That DEF fluid is nasty stuff, crusty and corrosive.
Do not rule out working with your hands, but it does not preclude using your head.

The problem I’ve had has been with flow through the injector. Cleaning has not worked because the restriction has been internal to the injector. So, I’m assuming there is some sort of injection/flow feedback to the system. Low flow illuminates the engine warning light. Adding distilled water will dilute the sodium hydroxide solution. Using 100% distilled water would make the problem go away. Is there a sensor that reads the NaOH concentration? I can’t imagine, this would be pretty high tech for an exhaust system unless it is resistance/current based through the DEF solution.

Running the truck hard, like a rental, will do nothing to clean the DEF injector. Whomever told you that at the dealership is an idiot and should turn in their FCA card.

If you have sodium hydroxide(NaOH) in your DEF tank you have bigger problems. You want a solution of 67.5% distilled water and 32.5% (NH2)2CO.
The DEF is most likely tested in tank for conductivity and using the NOx sensors along with injection flow rate get a good idea if DEF is any good.

Take the def injector out ,put 12vots to either prong ,this will open it and should allow full flow through it ,then blow water through it until you see all 3 holes streaming water . Use a hose and a plastic bottle to squeeze and create pressure ..It will clean out ....

My CEL about DEF was on, injector replaced by dealer and no help...they replaced the DEF pump and that took care of the problem...
