Rotella T6 5w40 is excellent oil and have put 200k on my 7.3 X and 80K on my ED with it however wanted to try Delo 5w40 since I was due for a UOA soon. Below are the MILES this engine has run on each specific oil. Changed to Delo 20,000 ago:

0 - 53,000 = Pennzoil Euro L 5w30 (Dealer maintained) 1 oil sample 17,500
53,000 - 130,000 = Rotella T6 5w40 (Dealer maintained) 2 oil samples 80,000 and 89,600
130,000 - 149,500 = Delo 5w40 (Myself/Wix Filter) 1 oil sample 149,500

The attached UAO is 3 different oils...same engine...same driving conditions... Variables and typical use...never seen snow or sub zero weather...mostly very hot Florida interstate runs with cruise 74 - 78mph....limited towing of boat and cargo trailer (Excursion Task) and GDE since 50k. 75% highway miles.

My conclusion was very surprised how low the iron and aluminum numbers are after 150k. Seems the ED is either excellent or will chew bearings with not much in between these two options. Both Rotella and Delo excellent choices however now being out of every warranty Delo it will be.

Fantastic results regardless of the oil, but as a long time fan of DELO I think you made a great choice. A fun fact is DELO stands for Diesel Engine Lubricating Oil. In the interest of disclosure I will have to say I worked 35 years at Chevron and had several good friends that worked in the lubes and lubes testing business. While I am a great fan of DELO I am also a great fan of all the oils made by major International Integrated Oil COmpanies. They spend considerable money of lubricating oil research and development as well as considerable funds on real world testing. Anyhow, congratulations on the excellent results on our engine. Mine is much worse but still doing fine at 72,000 miles. I have only used the Pennzoil and T6 since I bought a dealer oil change package and have one change left.

I struggle with the difference in the UOA results on these engines. Can you please tell me how you take your samples? I always take mine with the engine idling after being fully warmed up and suck it out the dipstick tube at the level of the bottom of the dipstick. I am convinced I get a representative sample but always wonder if other techniques don't.

Always thought Delo was a goofy name, now it makes sense. Agree...engine oil wars has pushed the R&D budgets creating excellent consumer products much like the 1/2 ton PU wars and light/medium diesel engine PU wars. Great trucks and motor oils. Use Mobil 1 in my daughter's F150 and Wife's Enclave.

Catch 'mid stream' during oil drain at end of each run for consistency. Honestly believe I could go 15k in between however just because I 'can do it' dosent always mean I 'should do it'.

Is DELO 400 5w40 a synthetic or conventional oil?

For those with a Costco membership you can get it for $10 gal for a limited time. I think I'll stock up.

The shelf sign says it's 15W40, not 5W40. Does Costco sell the 5W40 weight?

As an FYI....NAPA by me had the new Valvoline 5w40 oil on sale for $19.99 per Gallon jug and has our MS-10902 spec. It also features the Cummins logo on the label..

Fleet Farm was selling 5 gallons of T6 for $110, plus $35 rebate not too long ago. I bought 10 gallons...

Now they're selling 2 2.5 gallon jugs for $85. That's a smoking deal. Doesn't do any good for people not in MN or WI though.

I was going to run DELO for a while as it was cheaper the last two times than Rotela that I changed my oil. Walked into my local WalMart where I usually buy my oil and what do you know delo was $2 a gallon higher than Rotella, did my last change last night with rotella again.

Once the TSB came out that we can use 5w40 synthetic..... I immediately went to DELO 5w40. 65k , 75k, and now 85k....and love it. Once out of warranty and based on several UOA's.... I think the OCI can easily go 15,000 miles. Just need to make sure a great oil filter is purchased and used, or change the filter half way at 7,500 miles.

For a while at Walmart, DELO was about $20 and Rotella was $22. Just recently, Rotella dropped to $19.99 at my Wally World.

2.5 gallons Delo 5w40 was $52 and T6 $56 couple of days ago. Agree 15k w/ given individual engine demonstrates UOA worthy of effort. 1 gallon was less also than T6.
