At first I thought yes but then I realized that now I could actually read the "min" and "max" on the stick where I couldn't before. The actual stick is very dark which at first made me think the oil was dark but it wasn't. When I transferred some oil to my finger it looked clean...but it only had 5 miles on it. It probably wouldn't last long but I was trying to think of how I could clean up the stick at the end so I could better see the color of the oil.

Think I ground new slots in mine to better read the oil. That made the metal bright and more easily read.

Agree it is dark. Might be reasonable to buff off that dark coating to lighten.

First time I checked my oil I could not see any marks or the line where the oil was. I wondered what engineer thought a black dipstick was a good idea in a diesel. I do my own changes and it is normally a bit over full with 10 QTS.

I had a different experience, I measured out 10.5 quarts of oil after I did an oil change. The dipstick showed that the oil level was still low. The book says add 10.5 quarts of oil after oil and filter change. But what worked for me was to 10 quarts and 9 ounces of oil. And when I did this the oil is about 1/4 inch from the full mark on the dip stick, after this I call it a day. THIS WORKED FOR ME try your own way and find out that works best for you.

10.5 is 10 quarts 8 oz. Does the extra 1 ounce make much of a difference on the dipstick?

A quart is 32 oz. A 1/2 a quart is 16 oz. Being a 1/4 inch from full... the extra 8 oz might make his just perfectly full lol.

Long story short... the book says put 10.5 quarts in. Anything from 9.5 to 11.5 will probably function absolutely flawlessly and not affect a darn thing. I have yet to add any oil to mine in 71000 miles.
