There is a section of the radiator plumbed for tranny fluid? Are you sure? I've owned this truck for 5yrs and I've never heard anyone mention, nor did I spot, tranny plumbing to the radiator. I thought it only went to the little heat exchanger.

Not the radiator, the top couple of rows of what is also the AC condenser.
Here is a pic of how the transmission TMU is plumbed.
Make note the three way valve in the system is just to control the heat in the cab. That 3-way directs fluid the the heater core or the TMU.

start at post # 50 in that thread ,: https://www.ram1500diesel.com/forum/r...tml#post836570

for one of the ways that the 3 way valve can refuse
to send coolant to help transmission get up in temp .
or course that was up north and in winter , but it shows the work of the plumbing ,
controlled by ECM , 3 way valve , thermal bypass valve , complex stuff to help tranny .
the thermal valve in combinaison with the 3 way valve can act up and let too much heat build up in tranny .

Welp...heard from the dealer (after sitting there for a week and them just looking at it yesterday). Service guy says it 'looks like i'll need a new transmission'. Said they had to go through some additional procedures today, but that he hoped to have an answer for me. No explanation as to why they think it needs to be replaced or what's wrong with it (i asked). A little sketchy. Also, not looking forward to see how long this takes to fix. Luckily under warranty, but my goodness what a mess. A blown transmission on a properly maintained vehicle at 85k miles?

    ..
at first I read ""hopefully under warranty"" , , then "luckily " , ok , if they can convince FCA to pay for a new transmission ,
take it , those are good transmissions , very rare failures .

Finally heard back from the dealer today, after sitting there for over two weeks, and they will be installing a new transmission and TMU unit under warranty. Parts are on backorder (shocking), so we’ll see how long this takes.
