Dealer wants my truck again.

Got a text from a sales rep from the local dealer again asking if I wanted to sell my truck. I said only if I could get a Big Horn with an Ecodiesel and that I knew that it wasn't available in Canada. I left it at that. Besides I wouldn't deal with him again, as the owner is one of those that doesn't care about the customer, only what he can steal out of your pocket.

I sold my 2017 Ecodiesel to a used car lot last spring.

I had just bought the 2021 Ram 2500 CTD last April, and I had an ad on CL for the Ecodiesel for $30k, those guys were desperate for inventory. I got a text with an offer for $26,000 from Kendall used cars in Anchorage. So what the hay, I pulled the GDE tune and drove to town with the title in hand. The guy drove it around his empty parking lot, came in, and upped the offer to $26,500!!! This isn't my first rodeo at the car lots, they are all assholes lol, thus you can imagine my surprise when he kicked it up $500. I would of taken the first offer.

He did not want nor cared about the Mopar extended warranty, so I turned that in for $1250, plus $500 for the GDE tune netted me $28,250 cash. This crushed what the Ram dealer said they would give me in trade, $22k, a lowball offer. I had bought the Ecodiesel new in April of 2018 for $30k OTD.

So there is no inventory of new 1500 Ecodiesels available yet? It is a good time to move up and sell your old truck, if you can find a new one. I had to wait for my new 2500 to arrive, all the Cummins were gone as soon as they were advertised, I think I was lucky to grab my new CTD when I did.

The used auto market is crazy stupid right now. You can order a brand new vehicle for less than you will pay for the same one used. Major dealers offer squat for a trade, but used dealers and wholesalers are paying KBB Trade Value plus for clean used cars.

I advertised a clean late model used car on Face Book market place last week. I priced it at the low range of Private Party Value and expected to haggle down a bit. Within 10 minutes I was contacted by Texas Auto Value, they are a national wholesaler located in Texas. He asked a few question and then agreed to my asking price without dickering at all. They flew an agent to my area and met me at my bank to perform a direct wire transfer.

While waiting for the transfer to hit my account, I had an interesting conversation with the agent. The major wholesalers are buying up every clean vehicle they can find and in doing so creating a false shortage. They run them through their auctions on reserve with the plan of making $1000 profit on each car after expenses. He said they are buying 100 cars a day and auctioning at least 700 a week (700k dollars profit). They are striking while the iron is hot to buy and auction as many cars as they can before the bubble burst.

If you have a clean late model vehicle you want to get rid of, contact one of the major wholesalers. Texas Auto Value was the one I sold to. They are professional, courteous, and prompt. Not an advertisement, just my experience.

Just for fun, I ran my 2019 Classic through the trade-in evaluation at the dealer I bought it from. The offer was >$12,000 more than I paid for it, but I assumed a replacement would be way more. To my surprise, they had a 2021 Classic with about the same MSRP as mine for only $3,000 more than the trade-in. The catch is, it was a Hemi 4X4 when I wanted an ED 4X2. Who knows if they would have honored the trade-in valuation anyway.

I had a 2018 Colorado Z71 Duramax that I bought used in 2019 with 7,500 miles on it. This past spring and summer, I also kept getting offers to buy from dealers. I liked the Colorado well enough, and likely would have kept it for a long time. It towed our 22' travel trailer capably and got decent mileage. But the offers I got were close to what I paid after putting 35,000 miles on it in two years, so I started looking at my options.

I test drove a 2018 Ram 1500 Big Horn ED, and really liked it. But they wanted too much for it. Fast forward to a camping trip this past August that took us to the Midwest (I live in Colorado). I stumbled on a 2017 Ram 1500 Big Horn ED with 35,000 miles at a good price (several thousand less than what they were asking in Colorado). They gave me more than I paid for my Colorado. I only ended up a little out of pocket for the Ram, which had about 2,000 fewer miles than my Colorado by that point, and was in immaculate condition. It is SOOO much nicer, more comfortable, and better built than my old Colorado. It gets almost identical fuel mileage (both are stock). So far, I'm very happy I made the trade.

It is crazy times we live in, for many reasons, one of them being the low inventory and insane prices on used trucks.

I always have to resist the impulse to trade once my vehicles are paid off. My 2017 is nearly paid off, but it has 125,000 miles. Traded my last Ram in on this one at 300,000 miles and still got $10,500. Will probably keep this one as long. Love this truck!

I have the same issue. Even if they offered me what I paid for the truck, I'm not sure there is anything around here today that I want to drive home. We've been talking about a Gladiator but haven't driven one. She's leaning more towards a hybrid anyway and it's her turn to pick.

My kid and I sold her 2019 Nissan Frontier last fall. We bought this thing for $21,000 in late 2019, before the pandemic. It had 13,000 miles when we bought it. Because she's going to graduate school in NYC she needs the cash more than the car. It sold it for $27,000 to Carmax in Rochester NY, a 90 minute drive from our house. We had other offers from used and new car dealers that varied from $20,000 to $25,000. It had 42,000 miles on it. Yes the used market for small trucks is nutz.
