I have a 14 ram EcoDiesel with 299,600 miles and last month the vehicle stalled and quit as I was driving. Got it to a safe location and checked the codes p0087 and p016F were the codes present. Did some research and found out the HPFP was recalled and the codes pointed me in that direction. Took it to the dealer and they finally got it started and brought it in and said they thought it was the Tone Ring which was also a recall but my VIN did not fall into the recall. They continued to try to tell me that the tone ring was the reason for the codes mentioned above and they would need to replace the tone ring at a cost of $2k to $2500 before they could do the recall on the HPFP which I know the part is not available but I have talked with a Chrysler case manager and she is in agreement to replace all parts as needed with a new defective pump to get me back on the road and when the fix is available they would replace it with the recalled fix.

Would a Tone ring set the codes mentioned above? My thought would be it would set a crank shaft position sensor code not a low fuel pressure code.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

welcome (y)I would get a little better idea of what was down, I agree it also looks to be fuel and pressure issue but if you have to do the tone ring find an independent shop, I have a local transmission guy that has told me he'd do the tone wheel with me providing the parts and do the job for 12-1300, they are too high on that, the only problem you'll have right away is finding a tone wheel, everybody seems to be back-ordered

BTW, my 16 is not included in the recall campaign either and I'll be doing mine on my own dime, and it won't be done at a dealer ;)

Welcome - first post. Near 300,000 miles on the truck is remarkable. Bet you have more stories.

If they (dealer) finally got it started and drove it, it can't be the high pressure pump. Might be an issue with the lift pump being weak. Might be something else. If it were the high pressure pump it would not run.

If the dealer flashed the W58 software to get the truck started it could be tone wheel. But they should tell you what they did to get it started.

Just under 300,000 miles on your truck. Any major breakdowns or repairs needed on your truck? I have a 2015 with only 21,500 miles on it. I was thinking about selling it and going back to a HEMI. You read this websites and it makes you nervous.

I have met a bunch of people that own Ecodiesels but I have never met locally anyone on this forum, I interview everyone about their truck, So far I have only met one former owner that was not pleased with his truck, come to find out he'd gone from a CTD to an Eco and pulling an 11k camper, everyone else has smiled and mentioned they have/are enjoying their eco's, across the board the hemi is probably a little more reliable but any ICE is only a micron away from being somebody's headache  my advice at this point would be to quit reading;):LOL::LOL: and enjoy your truck

Are they charging for tone ring only, seems excessive. tone ring failed on my 15 eco, local dealer replaced with my extended warranty for 600 plus my 100, not fca warranty. Tone ring near the back, yank tranny and there it is.

I have had zero issues in the 300,000 miles i have driven it. This is the first time it has been to the dealer since it was new. I deleted all emissions and tuned it with GDE a tune at 60,000 miles. I do feel that is one of the reason i have had no trouble with it. Get rid of all the government garbage and let it run like it is intended and it will last. Another reason i feel that it has been so good is that when i start it i drive it for a minimum of 45 mins. I don't live in town and so it gets good and warmed up every time i drive it.

when was the last time you changed the fuel filter and was it a ram filter or an el cheapo filter.

Start there, simple to more complex.
I changed the filter with a WIX filter a week before i had the issue.

My scanner showed the P0087 and P016F when it quit. I asked the dealer what codes were present when they checked it and they said no codes present. When i told them what codes i had the mechanic strait up told me that my scanner put those codes in my truck. I looked at him like WTF. Then they said it started and ran for them. I went back that night to get something out of it and i thought lets see if it runs. Nope would not start. So $400 to get it out of the dealer for doing nothing and i will take it to a shop to have the tone ring replaced for $700 instead of $2000. Put a new low pressure pump in the tank since it is original and go from there.

Keep us posted... Supposably if your #Vin for the tone ring wasn't listed it was made by someone else or used a different process. Curious to know if it failed anyway.... All that labor don't forget the sensor also if another shop does it ..

Yes they are going to do the tone ring and sensor.

Maybe you would know this. My dealer said they will not do the safety recalls on my truck because it has been deleted. Do they have to do the recalls regardless if they are safety related? My truck was deleted long before any of the current emission laws were in effect.

codes I've read in the past relating to tone ring :
PO336 Crankshaft sensor (letter " O ") (accompanied with U1401 on ziggy truck)
PO16D Excessive timing (letter " O ")
PO62B Internal control module fuel injector (letter " O ")
PO0631C Internal control module RPM signal (letter " O " followed by number " 0 ")

....
your codes have nothing to do with tone ring ...
your P0087 : discussed here :
- - - - - - - -
and P016F , low fuel pressure : discussed in here :

"" My dealer said they will not do the safety recalls on my truck because it has been deleted. ""
Of course you don't want them to flash your ECM with any updates , you would lose your GDE tune forever
and your truck , beig fully deleted , would not work anymore .
