It was nighttime, the quiet roll of the highway providing a welcome relief to a day at the amusement park. With the kids comfortably conked out in the back and the dash reading a steady highway average of 29 mpg, I had to remind myself that I was driving a pickup truck. If a half-ton truck could be a luxury vehicle, the 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie may be that truck. Yet when the Ram 1500 was redesigned for 2013, Chrysler touted its performance capabilities. The 2013 redesign added aerodynamic efficiencies: a lower air dam, active grille shutters to manage air intake, and air suspension that lowers the truck at highway speeds. To this Ram added the more efficient 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, with variable valve timing and an 8-speed transmission. The comination in the 2013 Ram 1500 earned Motor Trend’s 2013 Truck of the Year honors and top of the class in fuel economy at 17 city/ 25 highway.
