Have wondered same...161k and OEM...long time Bilstein 5100 user on my X. My dad rode in it at 158k and did not notice any difference to hi 2015 ED w/ 55k.

Perhaps a Mod could alert Vern to this question...he would know with 430k+...however neither my dad or I have air suspension so could be apples v. oranges IDK...

The oem shocks can certainly be replaced by a better shock, err, the oem shocks are certainly not the quality of a good aftermarket shock.

So I called the dealer on this because i want to replace mine. I have 47000 miles in my truck with air suspension. Do the dealer calls it the spring and shock absorber and they are sold individually for $1400 not the pair, that's the front and the rear for $580. That doesn't make any sense to me. They called it sping and shock. Any help here

Run from that stealer (dealer) as they are way over bilking you. They will always try to see how savey you are and bill accordingly. Find a small independent if you are not able to do yourself. Look for references from others in your area. You might find it cheapest to buy the shocks of your choice and have them installed by yourself or the independent you can find.

I've replaced the suspension on several Jeeps so one of the first things I looked at when I got my '14 Ram was the factory air suspension - and I was bummed. Unless I'm not looking at things correctly the reality is the "springs and shocks" are actually one unit. There is no shock separate from the 'spring' since the spring is actually the air lift bag - and the shock is integral to the system.

I'm at 62,000 miles and there is some wheel hop that a good or new shock would prevent - I'd like to add a good set of Bilsteins but I'm pretty sure those of us with factory air suspension will have to replace the air suspension units and are subject to Mopar's pricing :(

I replaced my factory rear shocks (air suspension) with Bilstein 5100 (24-187374) and the improvement was significant. i replaced them because one of my shocks was leaking and I felt my ride was a little bouncy (not enough dampening) and the Bilstein 5100 are well worth the small amount of money they cost. If you're doing this, quick tip, remove your fender liners and the job is super easy.

2016 Ram 1500 front shocks on factory air suspension

Has anyone replace the front shocks with air suspension. I know they are one single unit but I heard there are companies that will disassemble the whole thing and install new shocks. Then you will have brand new shocks with the same air bag. Anybody have info on this or other methods

Amazingly to me I still have the original shocks on the truck (non air ride) No noticeable degradation. When I was a kid almost everybody’s shocks wore out by a 100k sometimes a lot sooner. You could push up & down on the hood or stand on the bumper and do it then jump off and instead of immediately stopping it would wave at you a bit until it stopped. And that was confirmation that your shocks were shot and the car would ride and handle rough road etc much better again if replaced.

Shawclan5 you can always PM me. If my shocks do go bad I’ll get the Bilsteins.

I replaced the original rear shocks on my 14 EcoD w/air suspension last year with Monroe Reflex shocks. At the time they where the only ones listed to be a correct fit. I wanted the Bilstien 5100's because I've had them on past Rams with coil springs and thought them to be a perfect mix of ride and bounce control.
I did lots of research trying to find why the 5100's weren't listed as a correct fit and the only reason I came up with is the extended length is about 2" more then the originals which are about 23.4 extended and 16.45 compressed.
As some have mentioned, they have installed the 5100's and like them. My only concern is when the truck is picked up on a shop lift and the suspension hangs down, will it damage the rear air springs because the shocks allow 2" more extension.
I'm not real happy with my current Monroe shocks and plan to put on the 5100's and also installing a set of limit straps to keep the air springs from over extending when on a lift.
Generally I love the air suspension except on the bigger bumps. The Monroe's just seem to give up and let the truck bottom out on the abrupt dips or heaves that come with winter roads even worse then the original shocks. It's better in "off road one" but limiting the speed to under 45 sucks.
Have any that have installed the Bilistien 5100's ran into any problems with the longer extension length or am I over thinking this ?
I've had to have my front air springs replaced twice due to leaking at only 42k miles.Thankfully they were covered by the extended warranty I bought and am reluctant to give any reason to void future suspension problems from being covered.
