Average Tank Range?

Eco Dieselers:

Curious to gather some knowledge on your average tank ranges before fill up? I have yet to crack 600 to a tank (close, at 575, and I probably COULD have made it, but I didn't want to chance it).

I figure I'm taking a bit of a ding on my range what with 4WD.

Everyone else? Numbers?

Thanks!

Love your username, by the way!

My "Normal" mixed driving... I see 450~480 mi, and have about a 1/4 tank. (I don't let it get too far down) If I let it drop down a little closer to "E"... it's 530 mi. (ish) I normally see 23 mpg most of the time.

On the highway.... I've hit 700 mi on a tank. (was getting 30.2 mpg) I put about 23 gal back in.

Just to put one last figure in place... with cold weather, winter fuel, and more idling... my short mixed driving is only seeing ~21 mpg. (still way better than my 2010 with a gas V8)

Doc, that's right about where I'm at, it seems. My commute to work is about 30 miles highway, dropping from 4100 feet to 2600 feet in elevation. Conversely, coming home is an obvious climb from 2600 feet back up to 4100 feet. To work, I'll see 28 MPG...from work, I'll see 21-ish...average them out, I'm about 23-24.

Beastly!

Good range!

That depends a great deal on how and where you are driving, After my fill ups, the average distance will vary from 580 to 635, Towing,,,that is a very different picture. I just keep the tank full as I never let it get below 1/4 tank & never worry what the average distance says. If we spend two nights in one RV park and just drive the truck visiting all the Nat Parks close by that will make the average better on that tank.;)

I get about 460 off a tank all city driving back and forth to work! I have 35 inch tires though and a 4 inch suspension lift still pretty good mileage

So what!

Not sure if it's an ego thing or there's some unknown contest, but why have to go some specific mileage on one tank of fuel? I do not think there's a prize.

Common sense says you need a cushion of fuel to find a station. Unlike boats where you go out on a 1/3 of a tank and then return on the next 1/3 so there's always a 1/3 tank for reserve you probably can go farther without being in need of fuel. Say 23 gallons of the 26. That leaves little in reserve to find a station and maybe not heat up the fuel pump cooled by fuel in the tank. If you do get the advertised 27 mpg of the EPA rated 4 x 4 fuel economy, you have to do that the entire run. Then you would be able to go 621 miles and have that little reserve.

If/when you do that, what will be the reward?

Buy an in-bed tank and go way over 1,000 miles per "tank" like me. Done it many times but still never got my award.

I think we're all curious of range, which is a direct result of fuel economy. Isn't that one of the biggest factors we all bought this truck?

Stock 275 Goodyears, 4x4, 3.92 gearing, southeast driving mostly (FL, GA, SC). Right around 600mi/tank filling up about 1/8. 24-25mpg mixed highway/city. Will start recording the difference with small lift and 35's next week.

Edit: should note truck has just under 2k miles in three weeks since purchase.

Indeed, I was just looking for a basis of comparison when I asked the question. As I expected, the responses run the gamut in terms of range. My ED is my daily driver and I wanted to see if I was inline with the others who use their truck for daily commuting purposes. Thanks everyone for the responses!

my average commute is primarily surface streets with 45-55mph limits, and about 6 miles of highway driving. being a creature of habit, my daily routine is almost unwavering the same monday-friday. my last fuel up showed 22.3mpg (calculated using fuelly), over a distance of 427miles. i still had a 1/4 tank left, doing the math, i could have gone roughly another 120 miles. i personally don't like the tank to drop below 1/4 however.

I always fill up at a half tank. im almost all city driving to and from work with maybe 2miles of 55-65mph driving. before winter I was getting about 250miles to a half tank and with winter im lucky to get 200miles depending on how much idle time. when I drive to Michigan from Indianapolis which is all highway (286miles each way) I can get there and back with the fuel light turning on pulling into the gas station back home (only done it once. don't plan on draining the tank like that again) hoping with the GDE tune it gets me there and back with 1/8 tank to spare!

I am looking into getting that tune, I am getting 900 klms at the most right now but my son just bought the 2016 Eco Diesel and only has 2600klms on it so far. 900 klms is approx 570 Miles. Has anyone else made any other MPG improvements to their Eco yet? CAI? Synthetic Oils in everything? Custom Exhaust?

Around town i get about 550 on a tank. Last week drove from the Phoenix area to Anahienm Ca and back to Quartzite on less than a tank. Its 700 miles round trip. I filled up in Quartzside about 80 miles out with just under a 1/4 tank and dash saying 100 mniles left.

510 Miles or so, 4x4 CCLB outdoorsman. Averaging 20.8MPG, about 75% around town, lots of stop and go. 24-27 on the highway, all calculated. The EVIC is only marginally accurate.

I have a camper shell, pull out bed slide, and auxillary battery adding about 600lbs of daily payload, and I'm no lightweight either.

I'm right along the same lines. 550-600 with the winter blend. Although we recently had a very cold snap (-10F) and it significantly dropped. I can't wait for warmer weather to hit and see what I get with summer fuel.

Typically fill around 1/4 or just under that on the gauge, and usually put in 18-21 gallons of fuel. Usually have about 500 miles per fill, with an indicated Distance To Empty of around 110-120 miles; I don't like running the tank too low. Winter takes its toll, though, and during the winter, it is usually closer to 400 miles per fill with DTE showing around 100 miles.

Summer average fuel economy is 25 or so, winter is about 19-20.

Crew Cab, "long" box, 3.55s, and GDE tune.
