Battery terminal corrosion is typically caused by battery vapors escaping around the battery terminal where it enters into the battery case. Once you get the terminal and the battery clamp clean, pick up those (search) "battery felts washers" and put one under the battery clamp. That will stop future corrosion.
Ordered.

May not have them before I leave but it I do will take them with me. Never heard of such a thing. Thanks for the education.

Did coat terminal by brushing on dielectric grease and then covering everything with some Fluid film.

I have used those felts, and they worked well, especially on my boat batteries. Haven't used them for about 10 years as I find a light coating of liquid oil products works. Currently use CorrosionX.

Fluid Film is an excellent product, I also coat my battery connections with Fluid Film.

As the name implies, dielectric grease is non-conductive and relies on contact displacement to make the electrical connection. Because of this, coating the battery terminal and using a clamping connector isn't a good idea. Best to make a dry connection and coat the exterior of the connection.

Ordered extra. Will use on boat and maybe tractor. Seems that is where I often fined such - almost always on the negative terminal.

Had an 05 Corolla that always had corrosion on the negative terminal. No amount of grease or felt washers would keep it at bay for long. Got rid of the car at over 200k miles so saw this effect with several different batteries too.

WHY?

My old boat had four batteries, two for each motor. All four of them did the same thing. Comment is that the cause is a leak near the base of the batteries' terminal. It if does this on many different batteries you would think there has to be another reason or reasons.

There are also battery clamp pullers that are made just for battery terminals, work really well !

Never tried to figure out the why since it never created any issues with starting.

I always looked at the negative battery corrosion issue as a sign the battery was soon to fail or failed. Every one I cleaned up corroded up again. In the boat they always failed to both take a charge and start. Often had to use my switching arrangement to transfer motors to other battery banks to keep things going.

Owners complain about two batteries in their trucks. Well try replacing four or more in a boat seemingly every year or so.

There should be no corrosion on AGM battery posts. I never see corrosion on AGM battery posts, ever. This is noted on my Yamaha quad, the RV house batteries, the Ecodiesel too (sold). My Cummins isn't old enough to have this issue, yet.

I'll attach a pdf with very good info on how AGM batteries work. I used this info to set up my solar array with AGM batteries.

Under normal operation they should NOT leak anything. You can even lay AGM/Gel batteries on their sides. Charging voltages need to be turned down a bit from what a regular wet cell battery can use. You can overcharge AGM batteries, they can swell up and blow off gas, there is a relief valve. That old style 30 year old battery charger will kill AGM,s.

If the post is leaking gas, and I think it is, eventually the electrolyte will evaporate off, and with no way to replenish, and will fail prematurely.

The Duracell AGM house batteries on our RV are 3 years old now, and have zero corrosion. These batteries are depleted every night when we're out and about, and are hard charged during the day via 4 100 watt solar panels, and are worked very hard. Zero corrosion. The old wet cell style batteries were another story, I was always adding water and cleaning off the posts.

Is there corrosion on the the other battery? (The Cummins have two for those not in the know) I never noticed any battery corrosion on my Ecodiesel after 3 years.

I suspect @Captainmal you just have a defective battery. I hope that is all the issues you have with what is so far for me, an outstanding solid truck! Good luck on that HPFP replacement!

Wow what a huge, informative article. Well worth keeping. Did note”no corrosion” as a feature. Will watch mine as it is probably on the outs.

Towed toy hauler yesterday from south of Tampa to near Athens, Georgia. In an RV campground right now and heading to Maggie Valley today. Of note is my lie-o-meter showed 15 mpg for the first 150 miles running 64-66 mph behind a Walmart truck mostly. Then got antsy and picked it up to 70 mph or more. Dumped my fuel mileage.

Just before stopping I put in 39 gallons of fuel for $178. Do not remember mileage but calculated at 12.8 mpg. Going to be slower today but mountainous. One thing interesting is I messed up and ran more than 100 miles with exhaust brake on. Noted more fuel consumption during that time but too stupid to see that light on near the tow haul mode light. First time ever did that.

Learning all the time.

Was checking the air filter today. Ended up just cleaning some bugs off, vacuuming the bottom of the box and putting it back in when I saw it. Corrosion on the negative battery terminal on that sides' battery. Checked the drivers' side battery and no corrosion. My take is just this one battery is starting to go bad. Not changing now as I am off on a trip next week for a few weeks and detect no issues with starting or operation.

Getting late but tomorrow I will take that terminal off, clean it good and cover it with some battery corrosion fluid. This tells me that battery is not long for operation. Guessing that even if the other battery is still perfect I should change them both at the same time. The truck is three years old.

Your thoughts.
There are two types of corrosion on battery terminals.
green and white.also let me add plain old rust.

The factors are the physical element corroding, the hydrogen sulfide gassing off during charging and the air/wet environment. It has little to do do with the state of the battery or connection. Dirt just gives it a path to travel from positive to negative and is a drain in itself

let’s do the colors one by one.
Green is Cupric oxide from corrosion on terminals. Copper terminal can and will corrode with salt water from roads. Sometimes one battery will get it more than others dues to aerodynamics
Yellow is the reaction of hydrogen sulfide and lead from the post reacting. The vent on the battery slowly releases the byproduct of charging and reacts with the lead and copper producing strange color mixtures.
Add this into the god knows what alloys they add into the terminal rings and yes you can get a rainbow.
I’m no chemist but I have studied this all my life
And those are my thoughts.
Keep em clean, spray corrosion inhibitor on them to keep things from oxidizing and you should be good.

Wow, I learned a lot on this one. Nice post.

That is my question too, does the engine brake being on use more fuel? A question for the masses.

12.8 mpg sounds pretty familiar to me when towing with the CDT.

Soaking wet motorcycle ride this afternoon in Maggie Valley. Wife not happy and too much rain right now to look at battery terminal. Think mountain towing did less mpg…maybe 12.2. I did fair fly up mountains though seeing 205 degrees in coolant temps.

White corrosion was what most on that terminal was. Looked like little balls that you could knock loose and blow away. Sure like the information provided. Thanks all.
