What you think? Like an idiot, I forgot to latch the trailer to the truck. As I loaded the tractor the tongue came flying up and decided to insert itself here.

We all have those idiot moments - don't let it bother you! Looks very fixable. You can even remove and leave the tailgate with the bodyshop and not have to tie up your truck.

Yeah , remove tailgate , put it on 2 of these ( I don't know the name in english ):(
use pliers to squeeze pieces of wood to strighten the bump , it will be there still but less obvious .
,,
then : sand 150 ==> primer ==> sand 180==> putty ==> sand 302 ==> primer ==> glazing putty ==>sand 320 ==> primer ==>sand 320 ==> paint ,
at the least , paint bare metal part , no matter the color  ,you just don't want bare metal to start rusting .

I did this once to an F-150 I owned years ago. I beat it back place and then put a four inch wide strip of diamond plate across the bottom of the tailgate. It covered the damage and served to protect from further damage. It actually looked pretty good.

You can always tell which Jeep Wranglers that have had their quarter panels bashed. The owners will install body armor to cover up the damage.

Yet another reason to stay away from a used Jeep! It wasn't that I forgot to attach the trailer on my old truck, it was that the hitch on the rental unit was so badly worn that driving the stump grinder onto their trailer popped it off the ball. Good thing I wasn't standing right behind the stupid thing!

Sawhorse in English. What do you call them in French?

ncskibum , in french it is " chevalet " , cheval is horse , chevalet could translate to small horse ,
so "sawhorse" gets in the same line of thinking .
I'll remember that , thanks for adding that to my english skills.

I had that happen to me once. Thankfully my tailgate was all the way up and the safety chains kept the tongue from going up very far into the air. Now, every time I attach my trailer to my ball hitch, I always lift up on the tongue to make sure it's locked onto the ball once the latch is closed. I never want that kind of surprise again when I'm loading my trailer.

That sucks but that is why they say $hit Happens...

Or, you could always drive over to Kazimodo's house and ask him to "borrow" his " chevalet "
Then, in a blink of an eye, swap out your tailgate for his - simple.:p

Let a guy hook his boat to my Cummins. Lazy me as he was a good mechanic and I did not check. When it came off the tongue it went THROUGH my tailgate.

My fault. I bought a whole new tailgate from a yard that sold take-offs. Yours looks like an easy fix. Just leave marks to remind you. I also use bumper stickers for reminders when I cover over stupid damage.

Ohhhhhhh, Mannnnnnnnnn, ouch, it's called character, and you did it.... hey, we've all done it, now, someone suggested doing the job yourself, but, for $200 to $250 or less, drop by your local body guy, if it's bright white, PW7 is the paint code, and say, fix it... just jerk the gate off, and see ya later... he should call you in about 3 days, maybe 4 if his painter isn't drinking or high on fumes...
