Was curious if anyone has driven their ED down to Mexico and gotten diesel there? I've heard that some of the fuel stations in more remote locations don't have ULSD and that it can mess with newer diesels. Hoping it won't be an issue.

Thanks

Welcome - First post.

Those that recently run there are in two camps. One camp says carry all the spare fuel you can and use it.

Others carry fuel additives to somehow deal with the sulfur issue. It could have an issue with emissions equipment over time. How much time? Some have done it and I do not remember any reports about problems. Report back when you return.

Thank you. I know that I can fill up in Ensenada with ulsd, but we are heading all the way down to La Paz. I think I am probably going to have to run at least one tank of non ulsd. What additives would you suggest? I have some Stanadyne. Would that work?

I will be sure to let you guys know how it goes.

I have gone 2/3rds of the way down into Baja in my ED. You can get ULSD all the way down in Baja Norte and I mean right at the dividing point. We carried 10 extra gallons and filled up at the last-chance Pemex. I can try to find you a contact of a guy who monitors the ULSD down there but you can probably google your question and find him.

If you asking about Mainland Mexico, I can't help there.

It's baja. Going down the chase for the Baja 1000. I find a list of stations that had it, but the furthest south it said was Ensenada. We are heading all the way down to La Paz. I am going to have to do some more googling.

Thanks for the help

No, way past Ensenada. Jesus Maria is the last station that has ULSD and about 20 miles south, it's LSD I think. It's a long story on why it's not available all the way but the Mex. government keeps saying they're going to do it. From what I'm told, US diesels do ok if you don't burn a lot of it and you may throw a code but it'll clear up after a tank or so of the ULSD. Manufactures could void your warrantee though (I guess) but there are a lot of new ULSD vehicles from the US down there. Oh some people burn a 50/50 mix to extend the distance they can go. Ted White is the guy I was thinking about. Find his site and contact him. Very nice and knowledgeable guy, keeps tracks of failure, years, makes, stations, etc.
. Take extra DEF as you can't find it down there and you may use more of it if you use non ULSD. I was like you and was worried but we had zero issues and don't bother asking the station if they have ULSD, they'll say yes no matter what. Just know that once you cross into Baja Sur, most likely it's NOT ULSD regardless of what they say. BTW, the ULSD usually is from the US and/or Japan (I think).

His site is one that I found. I am thinking that I will probably only need to run one tank, maybe two, of diesel in Baja Sur. Hoping it won't have any issues. I have an OBDII bluetooth and the torque app that will let me clear the codes if the pop up.

I just got back from pre-running the whole B1k course in a RZR and chasing with my ED. We bought a lot of diesel fuel down there including Baja Sur and had no issues. We averaged 15mpg on the trip but that is another story. I was on the lookout for LSD or ULSD signs at the gas stations but never saw one. The only thing to note is I have a GDE tune in my truck, not sure if it helped. Enjoy your trip and watch out for the big trucks.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't have a tune, but I think I should be alright. Gonna try and keep it filled up north of Baja Sur as much as possible.

That's a good idea and I should have mentioned that. It's easy to just fill it up when you get a chance. A station might be closed, out of diesel, etc. Also, if you do take diesel cans down with you, don't fill them up in the US. They won't let you take filled cans over the border (if they catch you).

Thanks for all the pointers. Everything went great. I only put maybe 15 gallons of fuel in from Baja Sur, didn't have any issues. I did use about 2.5 gallons of DEF and drove about 2,400 miles down there.
