Been curious what I might get for fuel mileage if I went anywhere without towing. 291 miles of running north on Interstate 75 to a motorcycle race north of Ocala Florida, then back home south of Tampa. There were a few miles off the interstate before and after but mostly around 75-80 mph just keeping up with traffic.

Made it a point to check yesterday so went to a local station, filled to shut-off, waited and added to shut-off again. Calculated 22.0 mpg.

Thought it would be higher. The lie-o-meter said 23.5. I have seen it above 25 mpg at times but overall calculated never that high as I do not fuel often with the extra tank and frequent towing and/or running errands.

That's it. Surely not Ecodiesel mileage but pretty decent for such a heavy and large 4x4 pickup.

Hi: Captainmal... My lie-o-meter is usually 1/2 a bubble off plumb. When I hand calculate I run out of fingers to count on. I always set the pump handle on slow and round to the next nickel cause we don't have pennies. That's as equal as I can make it.

I average around 21-22 mpg highway on long trips and around 17-18 mpg around town.
I have a G56 and I’m still happy with the mileage for a 2016 3500.
My old Eco after they stealership flashed my truck (2014) went from 29-30 mpg highway down to 21 mpg.
Overall I’m impressed with my Cummins.

Did yo by chance have a tail wind? Sounds normal except for the 80 mph part.
Went north and then south. Do think I had a crosswind much of the time. On the return the traffic from Ocala to "The Villages" was hideous. It was often stop n go. Forgot that mess.

As for the 80 mph, that would be bursts to get out of a truck's way, around one or something like that. Mostly cruising right at 75 mph. That is the speed of traffic in the hideous traffic of snowbirds and trucks. Were it not snowbird season the main traffic would run about 78 to 80 mph. Florida traffic is miserable and there's near no police oversight on the interstate. They don't pay them enough so there are not enough State Police. Mostly the locals seem to avoid the interstates, unlike Georgia.

I recall the freeway going north through Florida was one rough road with construction going on.

California isn't any better, the hwy 111 north along the Salton Sea has nothing on Alaska roads for heaves and bumps.

Been towing with both trucks same loads same fuel same routes. 65 mph. Mostly 27, 28, 30` non Classic Airstreams 66 to 6900 pounds
12.9 to 13.5 with Cummins
14.0 to 15.5 with the ED
Winter fuel vs summer fuel into moderate head wind vs not. About a 2 mpg gap.
Heavier or faster the fuel gap spread narrows quickly. ED is tuned Cummins isn't.

Running hard unloaded 80-85 mpjh
20-21 Cummins vs 22-23 ED
Again about a 2 mpg spread. If I slow down to 65 mph the spread gets bigger in favor of the ED

I'd rather drive the ED unloaded even towing light to 6,500. But some of that is just tuning I don't like the sluggy slow response of the Cummins so I plan to try pedal commander. Prefer the power weight and the not requiring use of the WDH above 6,500 pounds of the Cummins.
I currently have 61k on the Cummins 904k on the ED

Do you have the factory rear sway bar on your eco-diesel or did you go to an aftermarket?

VERN is right about the fuel mileage difference.

I still have the same toy hauler I had with my Ecodiesel. The towing difference is around a 1 mpg difference. Oh so many call that a "fudge' but it is truly not. The only scenario where I see much difference between the big 4 x 4 Cummins and the 4 x 4 Ecodiesel was running without a trailer. Then my tuned Ecodiesel did 4-6 mpg better.

Now, wonder what that will be like when/if I tune my Cummins?

DATA I still have the factory sway bar. Air bags and WDH I didn't feel the need. I do suspect it would help some.

Glab to see the minimal differences. Makes the discussion about going to a 2500 more reasonable if that's what we decide to do to get the trailer we think we need.

I'm not sure what you ran into on I-75 to get that mpg, but I ran my truck from Palm Bay, FL on the east coast to Travelers RV park on I-75 near Gainesville, Fl which is 198 miles one way and got 28.2 mpg at 75 mph. I do have a 321 rear end and the Limiteds with air ride drop down for better aerodynamics. I also average 20+ mpg running around town. This is amazing for me coming from my 3500 mega cab dually that averaged 15-17 highway and 10-12 city after full delete.

Stopped me from leaving for the rifle range right now. AVERAGED 22 mpg...28 mpg.???

Could not believe this would be a Cummins engine in a HD Ram. Now I feel good. They were talking about the little 1500 Ecodiesel.
