For all practical purposes, you should have two ECMs. This is one reason why I'm hoping the handheld flash tool becomes available. It's nice when tuning files can be sent via email.
Just to be clear...If one has a GDE tune installed, is it necessary when putting in a factory ECM before going to the dealer to "reflash" the tranny?
What would be the outcome if the ECM was replaced with Stock, but leave the tranny tuned for a short time...ie: go to the dealer for an oil change and then put the tuned ECM back in?
If the engine tuning is meant to be complemented by the transmission tuning, then any changes in the TCU that are not expected in the stock software might show up as errors, including warning lights. No idea for sure, just conjecture.
Not sure I'd bother to swap anything, if only going in for an oil change. Now if it was a warranty or recall, then I might.
For that matter, not sure I'd go to the stealership for an oil change, but that's just me.
Not a must but never know when there may be a need for a dealer visit. I have no intentions of pulling into a dealership service bay except for the HPPF recall - and then I'll switch to the stock ECM and stock trans tune from the handheld tuner.
I didn't have a 2nd ECM with my previous truck with the EPA-compliant tune and it was never an issue. But I've learned to not tempt fate.

But for a 2020 or later truck, there is no way to change the ECM programming on-the-fly, so if the dealership must make a software patch, you are SOL without a spare. You will have to mail it back to GDE to get an update, no?
