Hey guys thanks for all the responses. I think I have decided to go with MRT. Does anyone know if stage 2 absolutely requires EGR removal, or if like stage 1 the EGR is just disabled?

I got my GDE tune at 30,000 miles. I did not remove the EGR until at least another 100,000 miles. So you should be good with that.

Now, if you don't want to spend the $ on the pipe, you can pull the DPF, cut it open, hollow it out, then re-weld it back together. That's what I did. Most of my reasoning is that I was going into Kalifornia regularly at the time and I didn't want any visual indicator that I was deleted. Did a thread here about it, but it was so long ago that I don't know if it's still archived.

Are you running MRT or another tune? I got an MRT stage 1 and added the DEF disable as well. With the EGR disabled and now the DEF disabled I feel like I should be able to run a turbo back without getting coded??

Wrong. Gotta keep the dpf and scr when stage 1.

The owner of EOC, reseller of MRT tunes, will strongly suggest EGR removal when stage 2. There can be issues if you don't.

I got the epa compliant gde tune at 40k miles on my 2016. I’m at 75k now and i like the gde tune. I can’t delete in my area, i have to keep things in compliance. Plus, there is no worries at the federal level. Is a delete better for the engine? Definitely. If you can delete, i would. But if you can’t because of your local laws, gde is great.

If your truck is fully stock then go for the GDE Compliant tune with the transmission control. I DID ABOUT 50,000 miles ago. I even had them modify it slightly for better control of the transmission. My preference. You will be very satisfied with the tune and incredible customer service. They seem to be straight up, answer any question on the spot. If your near Detroit they'll put it on for you. I'm in Western NY and I drove over, about 7 hours if I recall, to have the guys that wrote the program put it on the truck.

I didn't think they would do this because their canned tune is the only one with EPA approval. Any variation from that would put them in a spot.

yeah if I could have the tune installed in person I would. I’m in Florida so that drive would be pretty brutal. Thanks for the feedback

Yep, my pre-ban averaged 643 miles
John, I've been reading and liking your tuning posts since March 2020, back in the days when Glenn Pearson was still posting his mileage tests of tunes by GDE, SFT and others.

Just for interest, my stock 2014 JGC does a regen every 320 driving minutes or so (about 120 km (70 miles)) with city driving here in Victoria, BC. When cruising on the highway (up to 110 kph, but slower when skirting towns and cities), my Jeep does a regen after 550 minutes of driving (about 550 km).

I bought the SFT Stage 1+2+Trans tunes in April 2020, plus EOC's Stage 2 hardware in mid-2022, but still have not installed any of them. I did not have a Windows laptop for installation back then, but finally bought an inexpensive used laptop last fall just so I could "get off the pot". I've promised myself to tune my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee this year come hell or high water.

You have experience with tunes from both MRT and SFT… Did you also use their trans tunes? How would you describe the differences in operating characteristics between the two ECU+Trans tunes?

Yes, I use transmission tunes. Not sure if you want me to compare the companies' products or ECU & TCU. Here goes for the companies' products:
SFT and MRT ECU tunes are seat-of-the-pants equal in performance. As I said above MRT is regening sooner than SFT did. That bothers me as it's a sign of a dirtier burn and faster DPF failure. They seem to have the same local driving MPG, MRT has a slight edge on hiway driving. I won't quote MPG figures because MPG is so subjective and affected by so many factors.

Their TCU tunes are also very close to being equal with MRT having smoother shifting. SFT had the TCU Rally tune. I don't believe MRT offers a Rally but don't care as I never used the SFT Rally, except to play with. SFT locks up the toque converter, not sure about MRT but probably does as well, I can monitor that and should.

Sorry, I'm not more precise. They are very similar. There's a lot of talk about how much better MRT is than SFT. I haven't experienced any big difference. In fact, the shorter MRT regens is a negative, from all the hype I thought MRT would have significantly longer regen intervals than SFT. The big issue is EOC and MRT are honest and professional, SFT is dishonest and unprofessional!

Hope this helps you some

Trans tuning is part of the EPA approved tune package. But if GDE modified it for you, all the better.
Right on Bounty. I would think GDE after all they've been through with EPA and CARB they wouldn't dare alter their ECU or TCU tunes in any way. Very surprising, unless there's more to the story; like they didn't modify their TCU tune for the customer, they modified something else in his tranny.

Kind of what I was thinking. I was initially curious but have realized it's kind of a moot point.

I guess I was kind of miss leading. Sorry. To be clear, it was just a dashboard display change so I could easily see what gear I was in and control them from the steering wheel. We did not modify shift points and such. now that I am used to it I can tell just by the tach.
