Insulation, sound barrier stuff. I have seen this also by my battery but not in your same area but a hole you can look into on the fender, and I just stuff it back in only once since I had the truck since mid-November.
I've got a bunch of mouse traps at the back of my garage, actually rat traps, they really murder them. Loaded with a small peanut in the shell and a drop of peanut oil, makes them irresistible. Also heard that peanut butter mixed with baking soda will do them in.
That’s the same spot they would nest in mine. Caused $8k in repairs since they ate my main wiring harness

This was the best solution I have found for a fix. I spay it all in the engine compartment. And I use it all around the house to spray any wires or around my built-in barbecue

Our barn cats like to climb up and lay on the battery and engine cover when the engine is still hot. But that's definitely rodent!
