Heater Core Issue

I recentley noticed that I'm only getting hot air on passanger side only. Did the Youtube rabbit hole and figured out that it was the heater core blocked hald way. Im currently still under my extended warranty took to Dodge for replacment. Long story short is since its not techinally broken/leaking extened warranty doesn't cover it. Dealer said 2300.00 to fix ugh no thanks since summer if coming and I live in costal CA. I purcahsed a flush gun to try and flush it. I was wondering if there is anything else I should use to help I have heard CLR but I'm not too sure about that. I purchased a prestone heater system cleaner didn't know if maybe somehthing else might be better. 2016 ram eco Big horn QC @WD currently at 82k miles motor was replaced as well as the raditor 62k

Sorry to hear you are experiencing this, we certainly understand why this would be concerning. If you end up addressing this with your local dealer, please let us know via PM. We'd be more than happy to provide you with an additional layer of assistance for that process.

Hot on one side ? I doubt its the heater core . More like a blend door actuator

Hot on one side is not a plugged heater core thats more a door or flap in the dash thats not working

I don't have dual climate control. If that makes a difference
Have to ask, does it affect all three zones, such as the windshield defrost, the floor vents and the dash vents?

I have to agree with others. There's no way a half clogged heater core affects one side of the truck. Do you have access to another dealer that can look into the blend doors and/or controls?

Yes it affects everything in the drivers side
Very strange  ,but also believe blend door is most likely the culprit, another tidbit you may check out, if the dash has to be pulled check with local radiator shops, I had the heater core in my01 CTD done by a local radiator shop and it ran me about 1/4 of what a dealer would have charged

If I turn on the A/C I get A/C when I turn it to heat I still get air it’s not hot/warm. I don’t know how a blend door on a single climate control system would only affect one side and not the other. There is videos on YouTube expressing the same issue and after flushing corrected the issue.
^^^yes, that part makes no sense at all, the single climate controls make me wonder what is really going on, if you have good heat/defrost passenger side and nothing on driver side, is there air flow from/on both sides????wondering if it could be a combination of blend door(s) not acuating properly, stuck, I don't think doing the heater core flush would be to bad and may still be worth a shot, will be interesting to see your findings

Depending on trim level you may still have all the hardware in the dash like duel climate control just not the controls. Also if you need to flush the heater core then you need to flush the entire cooling system. These use OAT coolant so there is no silicates or stuff to really plug.

I only have 20k on a new motor and radiator. It’s a bighorn trim level

This may surprise you but a partially plugged heater core is most likely causing the heat on one side issue. There have been multiple instances reported of this happening on another Ram forum. It's mostly been on the 6.4L HD trucks but either back flushing the heat core or replacement has resolved the uneven heating.

Ive never said its not possible but the hd trucks use hoat coolant which can plug heater cores. OAT should not do that unless its been contaminated. Either way the op can try whatever they like.

You might want to check again, the HD trucks (CTD included) started using the same OAT coolant found in the 1500s starting back in '13

It would appear I was incorrect but still stand by my statement OAT well not plug heater cores unless it’s contaminated or the incorrect fluid was added.

Good to know. I thought for sure a plugged heater core would affect both sides.

It makes sense to me that there would be a blend door for each side, for several reasons, and a failed blend door actuator would account for a sudden and complete loss of heat to one side only. That assumes the default position is cold air. It's hard to see how a presumably single heater core would suddenly cut off heat to one side only, although Crash has read of that happening.

It sounds like you diagnosed it as a plugged core, which is not covered. Maybe if you rediagnose it as a failed blend door actuator, that would be covered--at least enough for them to have to check it.
PS I would think the Big Horn would come with the dual climate system, although I haven't checked.
PPS If you've already cured it, don't ghost us. Let us know what you find out.
