Factory high idle works in the similar conditions and its 1200 so gde high idle would make no difference for him. But the bd high idle switch is exactly what he is looking for.

Curious if you want a continuous high idle or just the high idle you get when starting up cold.

I have GDE but do not have their high idle option. Every time I start up the darn thing idles fast. When I put it in reverse to back out of the garage the darn thing takes off so fast I have to slam on the brakes or immediately switch to neutral to idle out of the garage and coast a bit. To me the high idle is a pain. Bet I can go 5-10 mph on the flat until that idle finally drops down.

To me the high idle is not wanted. Curious as to why you want it.

How fast is your idle? I barely move in reverse, usually have to bump the go pedal to get it moving. For me it's common to be able to idle and not move(without brakes) or creep along.

This sounds odd... i don't notice issues with high idle and gear engagement. In fact, as soon as i rotate the knob, the idle drops. I don't use GDE's high idle either.

^^^^same, touching transmission knocks it out of cold start fast idle.

Capt's Post didn't make sense to me either, but my ED had remote start so I always started it and let it idle for several minutes. Capt's truck is key start ,so maybe that's the difference in high idling? VS remote start? Just guessing

My truck is "key start" and GDE. The idle is slightly higher at first cold start and as soon as you put it in gear it drops. I would say 100-200 rpm nothing like the captains description above? I don't have the high idle option either. I would also be happy if it would idle at warm idle speed right off the bat.

One other thing comes to mind, if you are requesting heat from the HVAC system and the engine temp is <125* the ECU will increase engine idle speed to allow enough charge current to run the aux resistance heat.

Factory tuning has an idle bump with a ramp down timer. At -20 F it will idle at 1350 rpm range for a minute or two and then slowly drop down to stock idle speed in the 700 range in a couple minutes. Linked with this ramp feature is a shut off when the brake/gear is selected.

GDE high idle turns on 30 seconds after the cold start and will ramp up to 1500 rpm stable until coolant reaches 160ish. The modified injection parameters push more heat to the coolant and reduce warm-up times by 50%...you may only get through a half cup of coffee and the truck will be warm. The first release of the high idle had a limitation, it takes some time to drop from 1500 to 700 rpm and we recommended moving from R to N To D with a slight delay in each gear...this helped reduce the potential for a clunk and harsh gear engagement. An update to this feature in February added a high idle shut off by revving the engine past 2000 rpm and letting off, then the idle will drop back to 700. Now there is no issue when shifting into gear.

1500 rpm provides better oil pressure through out the warm up.

It would be great to have a high idle switch! Example when driving all night in winter -5F and at 2am I stop for a 4 hour nap. It would be great to flip the high idle switch and idle at 1100 or 1200 rpm during the long idle time.

When I cold start it idles in the 1200 rpm range. Most always in a hurry, I do not wait for the idle to drop as it warms. Turn that knob into reverse and the truck backs out of the garage fast. It's so fast that I immediately turn that knob to neutral and the truck coasts a good 50 ft. out into the driveway. Never touch the throttle (fuel pedal).

Brake on, I turn that silly knob to "forward" and the truck charges forward and out a loop (dual driveways) to the street. You have to push that brake aggressively for maybe a few hundred more yards to finally get it to idle in the 700 rpm range where it does not pull forward so hard. Been like that since new. PIA as far as I am concerned.

Do understand the issue of oil pressure when cold so it's not necessarily a bad thing. Just hate automatic transmissions and this is just another problem I have with the darn things. My wife's Ford is worse than my Ecodiesel. When cold or even when warm, the darn thing needs hard braking to just sit in gear.

Might just be my entire life I adjusted speed with the clutch, same as all motorcycles and tractors I have today. Today, especially because of high idle, you have to adjust speed with the brake.

Thanks for the info. I'm up in Canada and as you know it get's cold. I want to warm it up better before driving off. I wonder if it would do a regen on high idle?

Being in part of Canada's Great White North the GDE high idle option is a must for our winters... Last winter was the first year I had it and it was fantastic! My windows actually defrosted in the -25° to -35°C temps.. One 12 minute remote start was all I needed unlike the two 12 minute remote starts I needed with the stock high idle..

Well neat, I had no idea they had a high idle kit for the eco. I know they have made add on kits for the HD trucks with a manual trans. Just to add some insult to injury, the auto HD trucks come flashed with it. Hit the cruise on button and then the decal button, she pops up to 1100 and can be raised to 1500 or so in increments. Tap the brake or hit cruise off and she goes back down to regular idle.
