Hi all. I am a new member and a new 2020 ram eco diesel owner. I have had the truck for 6 days and it seems I am a victim of the famous HPFP failure - I am looking for any advice or information on what I should expect for repairs, will the engine be effected or just the fuel system? Appreciate any input. Thanks.
They are not able to even look at it til Friday. I diagnosed it as that. I’m sure it will be covered. I have read some horror stories though. I was looking for insight on what I should expect. I am worried about the engine now too, can the metal debris from the HPFP nuking get into the cylinders? Etc.
Let's hope they don't pull the "contaminated fuel card". Metal debris won't pass through the injectors into the cylinders, but the entire fuel system will likely be affected.
According to a recent diesel tech who worked for Ram, FCA would request a Styrofoam test. The tech would pull a fuel sample and introduce a piece of Styrofoam into the sample. From my understanding, the Styrofoam will begin to dissolve if gasoline is present in the fuel.
Assuming that your diagnoses is correct, make sure you fill-up at a reputable fueling station in the future. If the fuel does not contain a biodiesel blend, then I would highly suggest running a fuel additive that adds lubrication to the fuel. I'm not saying that your HPFP failure is due to bad fuel, but lots of data suggests that insufficient lubrication is the culprit. The owner who had the truck before you could have accidently put gasoline in the tank or gotten a bad batch of fuel.
Otherwise, the CP4 is a fairly long-lasting pump. We're now seeing factory installed CP4 pumps with as many as 375,000+ miles.
^ They shouldn't be able to get away with that, as it's not exactly scientific. We're talking a fuel system that's worth $15-17K, the least they can do is to get a proper test done. In fact, I would take my own fuel sample and have it tested as well.
2020 Limited Eco Diesel I just left the dealership and asked about the recall on my EcoDiesel HPFP. Parts are still not available. Recall notice is below: Safety Defect/Non Compliance Description and Safety Risk Some of the above vehicles equipped with a 3.0L diesel engine may have been built with a high pressure fuel pump ("HPFP") that could fail prematurely. A HPFP failure may introduce internally failed component debris into the fuel system potentially causing fuel starvation. Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of motive power, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. Repair Description FCA US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles to replace the HPFP, and inspect and, if necessary, replace additional fuel system components. Recall Status Incomplete but repair parts are not available FCA Recall Z96
Spoke with my local dealer yesterday and the best I could get is parts will become available mid February. I would call your local dealer and get on the waiting list for parts and then expect to be without your truck for 3-5 days once parts are in stock.
I couldn't get an answer in regards to "what if" my truck fails due to the HPFP during this waiting period. Quite the CF when FCA issues a recall and has no parts available for the fix.
I've only got 9,400 or so and have not been to worried about the HPFP. Figured I would wait in line behind the higher mileage Trucks since mine is low mileage...
I've got 31k on mine, love it, and have had no issues other than the recalls; Def, Radio, Tailgate, & HPFP
Not sure about fuel receipts...I'm not saving mine
My insurance company covers any damage done due to fuel contamination. So, if the dealer denies warranty due to fuel contamination, then I'm still covered. With that said, it doesn't hurt to keep receipts for a few months.
I personally wouldn't wait behind the higher mileage folks. No tellin when/if enough of these parts become available for all with an ED.
