Issue when coming to a stop or starting off from a stop.

Hey everyone!

New to the forum, love it so far, lots of great information. I tried looking around, but didn't find anything quite like this, so I wanted to describe my issue here and see if anyone is familiar with it...

I've got a 2014 Laramie 4x4 CC 6'4" bed, with about 49K miles on it. Bought it in December with 44K on it.

I've recently noticed when I come to a complete stop, I feel a little 'nudge' as soon as the truck comes to a complete stop. It almost feels like something is disengaging, or something has play in it that shouldn't. I also notice this sometimes while starting from a stop. There's a slight delay and you can feel it engage again. I brought it in to have the transmission looked at, they claim they couldn't reproduce the issue, everything looked & felt fine to them...

I also noticed from a stop, starting off, at about 1-5mph there's a bit of a vibration from what feels to be the rear end. Not sure if it's related or not, but figured I'd mention that as well.

I was originally thinking it was something with the transmission - but I wonder, would a u joint show symptoms like this?

Any ideas & information you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Mac

You're probably feeling the late downshift to 1st gear. It downshifts really late. Absolutely no rolling stops in this truck

Like stated above if you do not come to a complete stop the truck will try to start out in 2nd gear, if your easy on the gas it will hold 2nd and seem sluggish, if you smash on it, it will downshift and you will feel a jolt.

On the coming to a stop I agree again, the trans will shift to 1st gear almost after you come to a complete stop.

I have 51k miles on my '15 and it has always been this way.

Very interesting - thanks for putting my concerns of an issue to rest!

I've heard some good things about the GDE trans tune. I'm curious if their trans tune will help with downshifts so this goes away. It's not a big problem for me if it's a normal thing, I'm just a little OCD about certain things.

So, I was thinking about this more the past couple days, I don't think what I've got going on is the downshift situation. I understand it when coming to a stop, but when starting a roll from a complete stop it's also occurring, so I don't think the transmission would be doing any shifting at this point until it got to a certain speed.

Doing more research, I found a couple posts on various sites which indicate it could be an issue with slip yoke lubrication. If the slip yoke is not lubricated properly, or enough, it could cause binding, and you feel that slight 'bump' right as you come to a complete stop, or start a slow roll from a dead stop...

Anyone happen to have direct experience with this? Does this seem to be a common issue, or likely an isolated incident?

Any recommendations for product to use to lubricate the slip yoke? I've heard copper anti-seize should be a good option.

Thanks again.

I have a '15 with 72,000 miles on it and it does this exact thing. Thank you for the explanation. It drives me crazy, not to mention being downright dangerous.
Leaving our neighborhood there is a stop sign at a fairly busy road. Because of fences and landscaping it's difficult to see traffic coming from the left. The only thing to do is slowly
creep out to have a look. I have to wait for a much larger gap than I used to. When I had my HEMI I could floor it and it would go. When I do that with this truck it does almost
nothing for a couple of seconds then will jump. I find myself looking for very large gaps in traffic because I can not predict when the dang engine is going to decide to get going.
Very frustrating.

I, too, have this. To me it feels like a sticky caliper releasing; a faint, soft thud. Pretty much most times I let off the brake and give it gas, it thumps. (after being at a complete stop for some time so not a trans downshift) I was thinking about the driveshaft binding and had asked if there was a zerk somewhere like older jeeps but no one seemed to know (if any part was lube-able)
T-control on or off, no diff. Oh and I have an open rear

My 2015 was fine until the dealer loaded an update in December 2016. Ever since then the transmission does this bullcrap, and it lugs gears more. Before that, whatever tune it had from the factory (built 6/15) was perfect for me.

Truck is at my mechanics shop now, hoping they will find something. Hoping it's something simple like play in a u joint or needing to lubricate the slip yoke. Will let you know what they find.

Also ordered GDE transmission tune last night to get rid of the harsh downshifts in lower gears.

I think we found the issue. My mechanic threw put it on the lift, and I happened to mention that the truck also rattles a little over pot holes / man hole covers in the front end. While he was checking things over (ball joints, sway bar bushings, etc) - he noticed BOTH of my front cv axles have a huge amount of wobble/play where they connect to the transfer case... He said this could potentially be the 'bump' i'm feeling as well as the rattle i'm feeling/hearing over pot holes, man hole covers, etc...

We set up an appointment at the Ram dealership next week to get this corrected under power train warranty (good until March - only 49k miles on it).

I hope this truly is my 2 birds with 1 stone scenario...
