New EcoDiesel engine, crank no start

Hello fellows,
I posted a thread a week ago or so about a part I couldn't find a location for. You all helped me with that, so now I have another question.

I have a 2016 EcoDiesel Bighorn. I bought the truck with seized engine and put a brand new crate engine in it. Now I am ready to start it, but it will only crank. There are no codes. I ran the key part way on, to bleed the fuel probably a dozen times and cranked it for quite a while.

I programed the injectors, checked most of the electrical connectors and checked all the grounds.

I am thinking either I am not getting fuel to injectors or else not getting power to them. Have any of you experienced this or have any ideas on how to test the injectors?

Thanks in advance!

Its not the injectors start with basic things like what does the dash say while cranking.

The check engine light is on, as well as the traction control light. the dash reads: Service electronic braking system.
I was just curious if maybe I am not getting power to the injectors, keeping them from opening. (i.e. maybe there is a connector I forgot to plug together, on second thought there should be a ode the.)

Any insight is appreciated
It does sound like you have a connector issue go back and check all the connectors you touched.

Did you swap the crankshaft tone wheel from the seized engine to the new engine?

No I didn't. I assumed the new engine came with one. It came with the flywheel so I would have had to pull it off to check and I didn't. That's a really good thought. I will have to look into it.

Hello Crosshairs , are you saying the new crate engines come with no tone ring ??
that is a good info to have for anyone swapping their engines themselves ....

OP mentions engine light is on , what is the code ??
and didn't i read it was not possible to change some codes with Alfa if there is a code present ,
he woud have had a error message , and wrong injector codes do not prevent engine
from starting , just not runs with best possible smooth results ,
only the wrong vin number makes the engine stop after 3 seconds ...

I have never seen one come with a fly wheel so if it did have the fly wheel already attached to the engine, then I would also assume that the tone ring is there
I will post more tomorrow morning. I had church and family stuff today so I didn't get out to work on it. When I programmed the injectors I did get a completed message followed by a failed message, but when I went in and read the system it had the correct VIN and injector codes. I will double check this though.

Assuming the tone wheel is not the problem, I have seen these symptoms many times.

1) In my case, the "Service...." warning lights were almost always related to the brakes not being fully bled because I had removed the master cylinder to get the engine out, and did not bleed the brakes properly before attempting to start the engine. The ABS, Traction Control, Steering, etc. are all connected, so if the brakes aren't fully bled, you will start getting a bunch of errors the first time you press them.

2) As far as the crank/no start, this has almost always been a fuel supply problem. I've rarely had any issues getting fuel to the CP4. It's usually something else. The last time I put the experimental engine in, the fuel shut off valve in the CP4 was stuck. It took me a while to figure it out, but I ended up removing it, applying 12 VDC to break it loose, and re-installing. After that, I was getting fuel to the injectors, and the engine started almost immediately.

3) Regarding the tone wheel, you can do a quick sanity check before pulling everything back apart. Just take off the CAC inlet tube to the intake manifold, spray some starter fluid in there and crank it over. If she fires, then likely your tone wheel is in there. If not, well, let's just hope it kicks over :)

Also, I believe the Check Engine light stays on until the engine has actually started and all systems are cleared for takeoff.

Good luck!

Regarding the engine light. There is no code, it's just that from my experience all vehicles display the engine, oil, and sometimes battery lights when the ignition is on, but the vehicle isn't running.
The traction control light is due to the two front tires being off so I can get in to diagnose better.

I will try what @67_Valiant wrote out and let you know. If all else fails I have an appointment scheduled at my local dealer on Wednesday.

Thank you for your input.
Well fellows, I thought I would update you. I took it into the dealer today and paid them $340 to discover I hooked up the fuel lines wrong, put the pressure on the return line and vice versa, so there was no fuel getting to the high pressure pump. Sigh...

Oh well. Live and learn! Thank you all for your input.

Better than a missing tone wheel (or a sharp stick in the eye as my grandpappy used to say)!

Learning can get expensive 😬 , but generally they're lessons you don't forget:unsure:;)(y)
