Ok Now that I have all the recalls done and don't wish to spend $ 276 on a dealership oil change -I plan on doing it myself

Now the million $ question - what is the best oil to use in my truck and what viscosity ??

I know I am probably asking something that has been asked numerous times - but I want to make sure
I get the best oil for my truck.

thanks

42 what ?
Sorry man its a movie reference. But what I was referring to is there is no perfect answer to your question. There is a lot of great oils out there that well provide great engine protection its really up to you to decide which is ideal for you.

Thanks for that image Savage Patch ,
Nice comparaison of oil analyse of 4 different brands , all coming up good .
-------------------------------------------
as recommended by FCA in the update of 2016 .
Rotella T6 5W40 .
PDF file that dealers got in 2016 , procedures they had to go thru to switch trucks to 5W40 oil.
changing the specs written in your ( and mine ) 2015 owner's manual .

you pick the size of the bucket or jug you want to get ....
(( I was ahocked to discover the T6 also works great in my motorcycle ,
no issues , oil is used in engine and transmission of the bike and all is smooth ))
so for me ; one brand , nice not to have 10 different oil brands in the garage .

===========================
for rebates , new method this year :
2020 shel Rotella rebate links :
Canada ; Oil Change Coupons for Shell Rotella®

U.S.A. ; Oil Change Coupons for Shell Rotella®

both end Dec. 31 2020

until last year we had to go online and send them a copy of our receipts to get rebate ,
this year they have you put in your Zip code or postal code ,
they then give you choices of places where oil is available ,
then you print a coupon yourself to save at that point of sale ..
it was useless to me , all I got were places where I would have to let them do te oil change , NO WAY JOSÉ .

Found it at NAPA for $30.00 a gallon.. Interesting conversation with Ram dealer Service Dept. While they were fixing my EGR cooler and refreshing the computer - I asked them about
oil changes - service dept said wait 20 minutes after adding the oil to start the engine.. Of course they wanted $ 276 for an oil change - $76 just for the oil filter..

Yes it is 15 minutes , here is the rituel I printed and stapled to the wall in my garage .
..
-------------------------------------
- small ride to warm up the oil , (look at dash display to know temp).
- if you have push start button , leave keys away from the area.
- remove big plastic cover over the engine ==> (optional)
- socket 1-1/16 for oil filter Cap
- FIRST loosen cartridge completely , remove filter and
cartridge assembly, turning it upside down
and clean surrounding area .
- SECOND get filter out of the cartridge / cap , it is clipped in there,
the new one WILL be clipped in by you , it will rotate
but it will stay clipped in there ,
*** before clipping the new filter in the cap , notice the exact groove where the big rubber O-ring IS ,
outside of plastic cap, and remove big O ring ,
replace with the new one provided with each new oil filter , now clip new
filter in the cap. ** put some oil on the small AND Big new O rings .
*** DON'T screw it in place just yet

- THIRD remove Oil " Filler Cap ", and lift dipstick too.
- go under truck , 13mm socket , remove drain plug , let it drain minimum 5 minutes ,
"or until it stops dripping "
- reinstall filter/cartridge while waiting for oil to drain ,
- you can clean big plastic engine cover to kill time if you are quick ...
- after the draining .put the 13mm bolt back on , ((33 lb/ft (45N/m ) torque drain plug)) -( a bit excessive to me )
- fill with 10 liters of Rotella T6 5W40 oil , put cap back on
push dipstick in proper position , ALMOST DONE ,
......................................................................................
***- the 15 minutes wait ,after filling up , BEFORE STARTING ENGINE is
now official ..seems to be legit as of TSB Feb.7 2017

5W40 Synthetic Blend.
tsb posted in this thread too , post # 48:
Oil change oops
.....................................................................................
Next ; don't want to dirty the seats so clean up a little ,
next step is inside the cab to reset oil life in dash :
(( truck door may need to be closed ,( mentioned but not verified ). ))
- in dash scroll to see where oil life screen takes whole screen ( batt, tires,"oil life" )
- hold > arrow until you see the reset prompt ,
- take it to OK
- click when you are at OK and you should get oil life 100% .

All Done !!
==============================================
more notes on the oil life reset :
by howie : Oil life is now reset.
I did not interpret the reset instructions correctly.
First you push and hold > to reset. Then the confirm screen comes up.
DO NOT GO DIRECT TO PUSH > TO CONFIRM> YOU MUST FIRST SCROLL THE SCREEN
UP OR DOWN TO GET THE OK IN THE CENTER WINDOW THEN PUSH > TO CONFIRM
..
Other oil life reset method :

for my Laramie Ecodiesel push button start , this is the drill:

push start button without your foot on the brake
I scroll down to see the oil life gauge
press the right arrow and the start button simultaneously
pump the gas pedal three times
press the right arrow to get the reset option. it comes up cancel, push the down arrow to get confirm
press the right arrow again to confirm
---> it then resets , voila .
========================================================
'' IF '' you do not reset the oil life , when it reaches zero ,
the computer on the truck will not trigger the next regen , and it will throw you into limp mode
then you will need to do it .
---
enough info ????? :giggle:

$76 for a oil filter cartridge ? Wow. I am paying $55 here in Toronto and I thought that was way too much for something that likely cost less that $3.00 from the manufacture. The wonders for spare parts mark ups.

Ive got 85,000 mile son my 2015. I put in either delo 5w40 or rotella 5w40, depending what my local Walmart has in stock and what their pricing is. Past several times Delo has been cheaper. If they made a super tech 5w40 synthetic diesel oil id use that.

Personal preference is Delo 5w40. Ran t6 first 132k. Delo 5w40 10qt jug $49 in Florida WalMart and T6 is $54. Last change at 205,000 miles used T6 b/c WalMart was out of Delo.

If in warranty use T6 and keep receipts for oil and Mopar filter.

In Toronto i'am paying 35$ max , there is discount for TTC workers , BELL , plus if you said your shop name you can get around 25% off Regular price . Usually parts department cashier doesnt have any problem to give you discount . i have ZERO issues to get good price .
