Hi guys, I’m new here and having a issue. About 4 months ago I bought a 2014 ram ecodiesel with roughly 95,000 miles. The truck ran great when I bought it for the first 5,000 miles or so. I took it in to my local ram dealer a little after I passed the 100,000 mile mark to have the oil and fuel filter changed as well as to have it looked over as it was fairly new to me still at this point. Dealer said everything looked fine. When I bought the truck I was told the previous owner had deleted it and put a new exhaust on so there is no need to put def in. I thought great that is something I would have done anyway had it not been done.

about a month ago I was leaving work in the afternoon pulling a 16’ cargo trailer full of tools and not 300 yards after starting the truck and driving away, up a hill, I get the message service electronic throttle control with a CEL and the truck goes into limp mode. I take the trailer back and unhook and limp the truck to the closest dealer about 35 miles away. They tell me they can’t even look at if for a month and a half. Wonderful 🙄 so I get the truck to my parents house and start looking into what could be the issue. Me code reader tells me I have a p0299 code and a U1424. I cleaned the MAP sensor which looked like it had never been cleaned before which led me to believe that’s the issue. How could this thing possibly be getting any sort of reading with that much soot on it? Also discovered egr cooler and tube were gone and hole capped. I deleted code and everything seemed back to normal.

About a month later and 1500 miles with better fuel economy than I’d seen from the truck the same exact thing happened while this time in 4wd going up a steep gravel road slowly, on a cold engine. I delete the code and everything goes back to normal. A week later, leaving the same job as the first time, code pops again! Towing a trailer full of scaffold and ladders on a relatively cold engine in the same exact spot within 50 feet of where this all started for me the first time! I drive down the road a little ways pull over as the truck is in limp mode and will not go over 35 and I delete the code, get on the highway and proceed to pull the trailer 70mph for 50 miles then up an extremely steep gravel road which requires 4wd and everything runs fine. Plenty of power. 4 days later (today) leaving work, cold engine, code comes up again and goes into limp mode as it does every time. Pull over and delete code. Runs up the interstate fine at 80mph. Doesn’t seem like it has quite the power it did when I first bought it but that could be me just getting use to the truck and also looking for issues.

This all seems to be happening more frequently and is getting very annoying! I bought a new air filter today and will put it in tomorrow and see what happens.
Couod it just be a crappy tune? I do not know what tune it has tho I’m sure it has one being that The def and egr are deleted. Not sure if it’s had the AEM software update in ‘19.

Any thoughts? Thanks for any help guys!

My 2016 started doing similar things with the turbo underboost code, shortly after that I lost my turbo. I was at around 270,000 miles when it died. Your truck doesn’t have that many miles so maybe it’s an electric gremlin too.

I have had a couple of gremlins lately, the truck is at 290,000, one was an open circuit on fuel injector #4, we ended up running a wire to the ECM, that solved that problem, now I have an ABS “ service brake code” that’s been ongoing so we are going to do the same thing on that to see if that takes care of that issue.

It’s frustrating, I feel your pain, hopefully it’s not your turbo and it’s something stupid like a sensor or wire or something.

Sounds like a tuning issue some tuners dont shut everything off correclty and under random situations the egr flow control valve can move. When it moves and the ecm is not looking for it you well get an under boost condition. The valve im referring to is not removed with the rest of the egr its the throttle body looking thing that bolts onto the intake manifold. You can just unplug the orange electrical connector and see if that stops the issue.

The frustrating thing is it seems it could any number of things from simple to major. I’ve been seriously considering a GDE tune but don’t want to buy it without knowing what tune it already has. Is there any way to check that? Also, does anyone know if I can still use GDE with the truck missing the egr? I read on there website truck must be mechanically stock.

Hi: MToutdoosman34... I'd recomend you stay away from the same "Exact" spot. Somehow the gremlins are getting in!!! We had one like yours and after letting the truck cool we carried on with a MIL light on for a few driving cycles. It's all better now. Seems rest and drinking lots of liquid was all it needed.

If you're missing the EGR i would look at HD Diesel or Mr. Tuning, they can get you going if if some of the emission stuff has fallen off your truck

I hate to resurrect an old post, but you just saved my ass twice in 1 day sir. Well, hopefully twice. My trucks maiden voyage after tune and rebuild, the only code I threw is a p0299. Hoping its because I hadnt unplugged the EGR yet. However its block off.
