Sounds like crickets in the motor

Just curious if anyone has had this problem prior to the engine failing? It sounds like crickets chirping in the motor. No performance issues, no metal flakes in the oil. Just can't tell exactly where it's coming from. It started about 1 1/2 into a 3 hour trip, on the way home it got progressively worse. Still no performance issues (I babied it on the way back). Haven't had a chance to get it to the dealer yet. Fearing the dreaded lower end bearings!

Hard to diagnose remotely. Possibly the belt tensioner or belt itself. Could also be the alternator bearing, water pump or A-C clutch. It doesn't sound like lower end bearing failure which would be a knocking sound.
Crickets? That sounds more like the noise hi pressure injectors would make..,at idle. You don't hear that at soeed

I know it's really impossible to guess without hearing it. But, I was looking through all the different threads, couldn't really find anything pertaining to noises from the lower end bearings before they go. Thanks!

Nope, hear it all the time.............. Just fearing the worst!
YEP! That's it, just not that loud yet. I was watching the temps on the way back. Luckily they didn't climb though. Thanks for the help! Atleast, it's not looking like the lower end bearings!
Report back and relay the information that is was the water pump as the other one was.
Don't baby it just drive it! Nothing you can do to stop it if it is a lower end issue.
Personally, I wouldn't mind getting a new, possibly updated, long block under warranty!

Ha............finally figured out how to get the video posted on here. I'm going to take to her in later today. I'll update when I find out more.
I had that issue last Monday. I installed the GDE tune and it ran like that on heavy throttle. On Thursday the noise changed to a tick like paper plastic just steady and it did that at any throttle position.

I was merging onto the highway no heavy throttle just babying it as I knew it had an issue. Then I heard a sound like air out of a tire for a second then the check engine light came on and I lost half power.

I limped another 2 miles then the engine started clattering and the truck sped up. I braked and pulled over and killed the engine.

I tried restarting it but nogo. The first start was a clattering engine like a valve broke off.

Needless to say we hooked up our gooseneck to the Cummins and towed her to the dealership and swapped the ECU enroute.
I am still waiting on an answer from the dealership. A bit frustrating. They have 2 diesel techs that are tied up. Will let you all know what the outcome is.
That sound in the video is exactly what mine did just it only came on at full throttle when hard merging!

Sorry to hear the bad news! I couldn't drop mine off until later this morning. I didn't have that extreme of a problem. Although, the chirping did speed up as the RPM's increased. I was kinda hoping it was just going to be the water pump/tensioner like mentioned on post #4(I don't have any fluids leaking though). I will also update when I know more.

Good Luck with yours!
Death by crickets ! What a way to go.

Even if you swap the ECU they can still tell it's been switched out.

Please elaborate on how you know this. I doubt this is true.

I don't think that's entirely true.

In Limited3.0Beast's situation it is true, but if driven for a few miles after the swap all is good again. The odometer and ECU will be in sync.
