Hello, anyone have any experience with getting the GDE tune installed in a state where it is legal and then moving to CA? I've read about people passing emissions with it installed but anything to worry about? Once installed you can just roll with it and hope there aren't any failures or updates since they won't be able to provide support if it's in CA? Thx for any feedback!

Welcome to the forum - First post.

Nice to see you did a post after being here for near 5 years. My guess you have read around and learned a lot. Therefore the question - Which GDE tune?

There was an emissions intact tune and the off road tune back then. If you have all your emissions equipment then it is possible to go to an original ECM. Only thing is your emissions EGR and DEF have not been working for years. How much trouble will that be to turn things on?

If you have the off road tune, forget it. You have a delete without any emissions operation.

Probably you are a "rare bird" wanting to move into California. Hope the money makes it worthwhile and you can just buy another truck.

Take this with a grain of salt as I am in Canada, but wouldn't you be able to just use the tuner and switch back to the original file when you get checked? Then reprogram it back to the GDE tune?
That would depend upon if he has the EPA compliant tune or the original. The original tune would require a stock ECM as mentioned by 67_Valiant

Thanks for all the replies, and yes, have learned a lot here! I should've clarified that I don't currently have the tune but I live in a state that allows it so was considering getting it before moving back. I just didn't want to waste the money if I was gonna end up getting rid of it due to some legal issue but seemed like the updated version of the GDE isn't something they would be looking for during emissions checks since the EGR is still working. That sound accurate?

If you’re buying a preEPA ban GDE tune 1000% get it on its own ecm. This would be finding it from someone on a forum since it’s no longer available. And pretty much this will be the only way to buy it as a stand alone ecm.

If it’s the newer GDE tune (epa compliant) get it before you move and I believe you can use the flash tool through obd2 port to go between the stock and newer GDE tune. (hope someone else can chime in to confirm this part)

Why get it before moving? Simple…GDE will not ship anything to California nor will it supply a tune to a vehicle registered in California. (I think they ask for a registration picture).

Yes you can swap between stock and GDE with the tuner. I do this whenever I bring the truck into the dealership. Which I try not to do, but sometimes the 4+ week wait for my regular shop is too long.

I had a pre epa tune on my 2016 and it passed with no issues. Egr was still intact. My fear would be if the dealer flashes over it.
Since they can’t support Ca I’m going to have to go with a different tune for my 2021. I’m going to clone my current ecu so I don’t have to worry if it gets overwritten.

What company has an EO to sell in California on the Gen3? We were not aware of any legal options in that state.

Edit....sorry GDE I was doing this from my phone and didn't see it was you asking the question and I didn't read the question correctly...what is EO?
BTW I would buys your tune if I could get it in California! I loved what it did for my 2016

MRTUNING or can get his tune through EOC both are out of Canada. Here’s the link to the MRTUNING.

Other eco-diesel forums speak fairly highly of the tune.
Once you go down the rabbit hole of reading all the forms, you will realize the tuning business is a tough passionate one to be in. Everybody is "supposedly" the best!!

IMO it appears GDE has the most knowledge about the platform, but right or wrong seemed to be forced into worked with the EPA to get approval to sell in 49 states but in doing so may have had to give up some benefits

again just my opinion.

what year is your truck?

The Canadian tuners are not legal to sell in California, they sell illegally and CARB has not found a good way to enforce their laws out of country. EO (executive Order) from CARB to legally sell in California. Ideally CARB and EPA need to work with customs/border control and stop those illegal shipments at the border, we will see if that every happens.

We have several test vehicles, 2014 Ram, 2017 Ram, 2020 Ram, 2018 WK2 and 2021 JL.
