Tone/Reluctor Wheel Question

602 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  MR. TED
How many folks out there have had:
1. more than one Tone/Reluctor Wheel fail?
2. had problems after an Tone/Reluctor replacement?
3. replaced the rear main seal while having a Tone/Reluctor replaced?

Thanks

Do you have the ECM update done?
Do you have the ECM update done?
I don't think so.
I don't think so.
As we know, it doesn't do much other than instead of the truck possibly causing an accident on the highway it will allow the engine to continue to run until you can safely get off to the shoulder of the road.

What's the consensus on this issue, were only certain batches problematic?

I have a 2016 EcoD and when I first learned about the problem I hadn't received any recalls and when I asked my dealer about it, they said nothing comes up with my VIN#????

Only issue I'm currently having recall-wise is the HPFP that they still haven't designed apparently.....

Yes only certain Vin# . I know the early ones were not involved. Maybe they changed suppliers or materials after that and caused the problems

Mine is a 2015 it went out shortly before 100,000 miles 148,000 now still going. Mine was on the recall, I paid out of pocket and was reimbursed by ram.

The reasons I am asking the question is..
My original warranty has officially expired now.
Apparently my warranty related to the W58 recall regarding the tone wheel expires in July.

I was thinking of having the tone wheel replaced in July after my warranty expires as an insurance measure. I have several longer trips planned towing my TT in the fall and I would like to "not" have to deal with a failed reluctor while on a trip. Truck has about 66,000 miles or so right now and I won't be using it much this summer!
I was just wondering if anyone had had a second tone wheel fail as it doesn't seem to likely.

The dealer discussed doing the rear main seal while it was exposed, it is not leaking now.

Thoughts?
The failure is due to a defect, so in theory the replacement should last longer. Mine failed at ~106K - missed the extended warranty expiration by a little less than 6 months so had to pay out of pocket. The failure happened on May 1, the part didn't come in until May 16th, and they didn't finish the replacement until May 23rd. A failure on a vacation trip would have killed the trip.

Mind sharing the out-of-pocket cost? Also did they replace the rear main seal like many are mentioning?

Keep in mind any Transmission shop can do this for probably a Lot less. Easy Peasy....
