2016 EcoDiesel Blown Motor After Head Replacement

Long story short, my 2016 EcoDiesel was in a respected local shop with multiple locations for 4 months with a bad glow plug. After trying and failing multiple times to extricate the plug, I ended up approving them to replace both heads and all the plugs. On their test drive, there was a massive oil leak inside the bell housing of the transmission where the rear crank seal and crankshaft position sensor are. The crankshaft apparently blew in the process. I previously had the tone ring break on me in 2019 and the truck was repaired under warranty by a dealer (about 80,000 miles ago). The shop is telling me it appears there were pieces of the old tone ring in the transmission and they’re saying this caused the oil leak and it was just bad luck that it happened right after the replaced the heads.

I’m not a mechanic so I don’t know if any of this makes sense. Are they just guessing that I’ve had the tone ring replaced since that’s a known issue with this truck? It seems highly suspicious that they’ve had my truck for 5 months and the motor happens to blow up the first time it has been driven after they have done some thing heavy work on the engine.

If you have not paid them for the repair, that's an issue. To state that they "trashed your engine" is another issue.

Bottom line is, as I told you before, you will need another engine or you just trash the truck. Reality can be a "bitch" sometimes.

This is simply a stupid ‘I told you so’ unnecessary comment to a man simply asking a question concerning something he doesn’t understand.

Can you elaborate on what you mean? I have only paid a $3,500 deposit so far back in August.

What is the issue with saying they trashed my engine? I took it in with a bad glow plug 5 months ago and now it needs a new engine. I understand the engine has design flaws that have resulted in this problem for other people, but it sounds like the information for how to repair it properly is out there. If they didn’t know how to do that, they should not have offered to do the work.

Yup. @BrokenEco if you are going to go this route, litigation, or if it appears that it will need to go this route, find an Atty who deals with negligent repairs. Your State Bar should have a listing. Sooner rather than later is my advice. You’re going to need to establish a basis for a claim and another mechanic to establish the shop’s negligence or failure to exercise the appropriate care. If they screwed up, and are unwilling to own it, litigation is entirely appropriate; especially since you’ve tried to resolve it.

I was wondering, could pieces of the tone wheel damage the rear seal???

I have not done mine, I have the part though, but I would not think those pieces could migrate into the seal and cause damage, I know it's "magnetic" but I'm not buying the shops explanation:unsure:

Welcome Brokeneco (y) Hate it is under these circumstances  But I believe they are wrong about the tone wheel causing the oil leak 😢

The crankshaft apparently blew in the process.
I'd like to know more about this....blowing a rear main seal out doesn't break the crankshaft.

I'm also having trouble believing that the dealer didn't remove the broken pieces of the tone wheel....it's such a no brainer to do that, a quick shot of air will have any pieces lying on the shop floor.

"highly suspicious".....yes you should be!
