Cv axle removal is bringing dust shield with it?

Has anyone tried replacing CV axles and as you hammer it out, it seems like the dust cap is coming with it? Is that normal, or am I somehow removing the entire shaft from the front diff? My fear is if I keep going, I end up pulling shaft out and put pours all my fluid and would need new seal from somewhere.

Anyone have tips for removal? Seems to want to move but in the wrong spot???

Thanks.

I did both.

Driver's side is the one where the intermediate shaft came out with the CV Axle. No fluid came out, likely because the fluid level is below the axle level.

I ended up buying a new intermediate shaft for about 50 bucks and replaced with the CV axle. Went very smooth.

Hardest part of the entire process for me was separating the ball joints. Didn't have greatest tools for that.

I ended up doing a nearly full front end rebuild...

  • Already had bilstein's installed about 2 years ago
  • New CV axles
  • New inner and outer tie rods
  • New sway end links
  • New sway bar bushings
  • New hub/bearing assemblies
  • Going to shop for new ball joint installs later this week (I hate doing ball joints).

First drive will be to the shop for the ball joints and alignment.
