Just as the title implies. I'll be deleting soon and of course can then switch to a more traditional diesel oil. So just wondering. Given the three choices listed (all easily available locally at the same price when on sale) which would the experts here suggest? Stay with the OEM recommended 5w30 viscosity or bump up to a more robust 5w40. And between the two heavier grades, it's there any quantitative difference between them? Or should I just buy and use whichever is on sale cheaper at the time?

Seriously doubt the dealer would use an unapproved oil on the ED, CTD yes.

I don't think we have any true oil experts here. Lots of opinions and personal preference. :)
I wouldn't call 5w40 more "robust" than 5W30, yet I doubt you'd notice any difference between the two in your warm climate.

Since neither oil is the manufacturer recommend oil, it really makes no difference.

Since you are deleting the emissions any diesel oil would work.

If you can get a 5-30 diesel oil in your area run that. Even the over land big rigs are useing 5-30 in the modern engines.

We have been running Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 in both our test trucks for over 30,000 miles now and the oil analysis is coming back very good. We are recommending any good quality 5W-40 weight oil in the Ram at this point in time. We have reason to believe the lower weight spec oil is not doing the any favors to the bearing life on this engine. The viscosity properties of a 40 weight oil seem to give a little better boundary layer between bearings and journals.

The FCA spec oil has a limit of 0.8ppm ash (this is their qualifying parameter) and the Shell T6 meets all the other FCA specs, but the ash is 1.0ppm. This difference is minimal in the grand scheme of things.
