Had same msg last time we had a cold snap. It wormed up by the end of the day and msg went away in the morning. CEL was on till my drive home in the afternoon. Had Islington Chrysler apply new firmware and that should take care of the msg. However CEL will came on when cold and I would not worry about it. My truck is outside, DEF is frozen, CEL is on again due to cold temps. When you start up your truck, DEF heather comes on and there is a positive flow of DEF. What I heard, there is a sensor in the DEF tank that gets frozen and thats why there is a msg. Wish my remote start would work when this happens. Not sure how big the heather is, but on my old 2012 Passat TDi it was as big as the tank. On Passat DEF heather went bad and I think that was because I did not keep the tank full and heather was running dry.

During this current cold spell, I left some leftover VW DEF outside to see how long it takes to freeze. It froze overnight. After sitting outside for a day and a half, I placed it inside my garage (-6C) and was surprised to see that 80% of it was in liquid form. I thought it would take a lot longer to become liquid.

I've used my scan tool to clear the light. Just go for a good drive to thaw the tank and the message will disappear. Thinking I might have to carry around a scan tool when it goes below -30 and I'm away... Truck sits outside and doesn't run for days so I'm actually surprised how little it's actual frozen this winter

What was the code?

Well the dealer looked at my truck, the cel was still on when I got there this morning. They checked everything
And cleared the code and everything was fine they said, have to see what happens with the rest of the winter

Mine was P20E9. Reductant (DEF) pressure too high. Very common in cold weather across all brands that have newer diesels.

It appears the def system is having issues here in cold regions, it is normal for def to freeze but tank heaters designed to thaw around the def injector allowing them to work! But a high number of leaking def injectors (milky white residue diagnosed at injector) causing problems and catalytic converters failures, def pump failures, and O2 sensors out of range, some owners being blamed for these failures when they add def fluid, even though the fluid they use is certified to meet chrysler's spec and the American petroleum association standards.
I have not added any def, and my system has failed already! Awaiting parts.......no eta!

Def froze

I haven't added def fluid since December
I drive approx 5000kms a month
Gauge still sitting at 1/4 since December
I do 5 hour drives at a time and gauge doesn't move
I'm not convinced def heater is working even during long drives
I added another jug the other day
Still no gauge movement
It's froze solid !!

In cold climates you def heater works against windchill under the truck. Tested and heater works but in very cold climates when driving with windchill it will be effected.

No issues. Many sub zero days here in February and March.

Does anyone know how the tank is heated ? I had my truck up on my hoist and looked at it and didn't see any coolant lines running thru it .maybe electric heater?

Works well for me. Outside all winter and no problems. Remember that at a nominal 2% dosing rate it takes only about 2.5 oz of DEF per gallon of fuel. Doesn't take much to melt that little bit and somewhere I read def freezes and thaws evenly so whatever thaws is still the correct concentration.

The Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank is mounted to the left frame rail in front of the gas tank. The DEF tank is equipped with:

•Electric Heater
•Level Sensor
•Temp Sensor
•Vent Valve
•DEF Fluid Quality Sensor
•Fluid Limit Vent Valve
•Supply and Return Pump
•Integrated Inlet Filter

The Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) supply line supplies fluid from the tank to the pump and has connectors similar to fuel lines. The line also incorporates a heater to keep the DEF fluid from freezing.

I live in Minnesota and also had no issues this winter.

On a warmer note (pun intended), yesterday I noticed that my DEF tank indicator increased 2-3 needle widths as the ambient outside air temperatures climbed here (roughly 75 degrees). Fluid expansion I'd assume....the folks in the north with freezing DEF issues probably want to kick me in the nuts right now. ;) Summer's coming ladies and gents hang in there!!!
