With the low cost of a new manifold and the labor involved it doesn’t make sense to clean unless your doing the work yourself.

 

Do you have the egr cooler recall done yet?

 

Well...the dealer called and said he had my new EGR cooler then when I took it in he claimed he was missing some bushing or seals. He then announced that he put on a new version of the old EGR and I should be good. I went to another dealer and he said the first dealer had submitted that I had had the replacement EGR installed. I haven't had the time to deal with that. I have 165k on the truck so I'm completely out of warranty, including the AEM warranty extension. Since my original post I have seen that the intake manifold is less than $250 so I'll just replace that rather than clean the existing. How about the swirl valves? What's it take to clean or replace them?

 

Swirl valves are built into the intake manifold.

 

That should make for a pretty easy fix then.

 

I just searched for the manifold and I come up with a $800 price tag. Probably still the best way to go.

Wow price went back up it was under $200 at one point. At that price point a good scrubbing with a strong solution of purple power might be worth it. Or just tune it and leave the intake alone.

 

That's what I was wondering. Will the GDE compliant tune shut down the swirl valves and solve his issue or would he need another non compliant tune?

 

If the egr recall hasn't been done yet, your intake manifold should be covered along with your egr cooler. During the egr recall if intake manifold is faulty, then it's all covered.

 

I would make sure the swirl valve code is active when you take the truck in for the EGR recall. Make sure they know the EGR recall covers intake manifold replacement if necessary. The swirl valve code means it's necessary. Be persistent.

 

yeah, but they said the FCA computer system tells them that the EGR recall is complete, even though the dealer replaced his old one with the old design. That will be a difficult fight with FCA to prove to them that their system is wrong and the recall is not actually complete. And all because the dealer that did the "recall" screwed up. Might be easier at this point to get a delete tune and put in a banks manifold.

 

If you want the banks intake then it's a no brainer, I would talk to FCA straight and tell them your situation first. Then once your intake is sorted out you can spend the $$$$ on a good tune. Banks makes a great product but there aren't any significant gains for the amount of time and money spent on their intake.
Once tuned you will never have issue with Intake manifold again. My plastic intake manifold is still working fine at 133k miles. Most of these miles are tuned with just the egr shutoff.
