It would be interesting to know the build dates on all the Rams/Jeeps with failures. I wouldn't be surprised if the turbos impacted were some 2021 and some 2022 models, not necessarily the entire model year.

A lot more room in the Jeeps to work on the gen 3 ecodiesel engine! If you want to start tracking build dates my door sticker is listed as an 8/21 build date.

@Mzflorida (2022 Ram) 20,500 miles
Josh Nolt (2022 Ram) 20,000 miles
@EC0RAM (2022 Ram) 33,000 miles
Rob Rusk (2021 Ram) 34,000 miles
@ruskracing (2021 Ram) 34,000 miles
@ecodiesel13 (08/21/21 Ram) 41,000 miles
@otinchon (2022 Ram) 56,068 miles
Interesting to see this many 2022. And who knows how many have failed that are not on forums like this too. So, like you said wonder when the build date was. I have a 2022 limited and build date is 10/22 and I bought the truck mid-November then. 44 thousand plus miles as of today. been good except for the broken clamp for the inner cooler pipe.

When we bought the Limited most all auto dealers were just starting to get their lots filled again after the flu bug.

As far as we know, the faulty actuator could have been used during a very small window (2 - 4 months). During COVID, Garrett may have changed part suppliers or temporarily used a different part number due to inventory issues, etc. It's hard telling.

Add me to the list of P00AF recipients. 2020 eco diesel with 67,000 miles. Going up I-70 westbound just past the Georgetown, CO on ramp. Went into limp mode. Made it to the next exit just a few hundred yards later and shut truck down, read code, and then started it back up. Drove side road for two miles then back on highway. Went into limp mode three more times before the Eisenhower tunnel. Last time was 150 yards before tunnel. We were just out of the traffic, but definitely causing issues for others while restarting the truck. Went to Moab with no issues after that. Check engine light went off. Three days later we are near price, ut and we stopped today at the Ram dealer. They read the codes and the P00AF shows up. No other codes. I describe what it did and where but they said that the truck is running in spec now so they would just be chasing codes and likely not find anything so not worth my time on vacation. They recommended we dig into with local dealer at home after vacation. We left and went to Salt Lake City without issue. Then between Salt Lake City and Bonneville speedway on the flat and level highway it did it again today. Hoping we can make it back to Michigan. This truck stranded us on our first vacation with it due to a wiring harness being installed incorrectly and the drive shaft wearing through wires. I like the truck , but the wife says she will never trust it on vacation again towing. It is pretty scary when it goes into limp mode and you are on a steep mountain incline in a construction zone.

That must've been an interesting, nerve-wracking experience. :(

I'm at 63.5k miles now. Will be doing some towing next month as I got to mow a coworkers plot of land up north of me into the hilly Adirondacks. Granted it isn't thousands of miles, it would sure make me scratch my head if this happened to me. The weight of my tractor plus flail mower and trailer brings me just shy of 7,500#. Add some cargo and a few extra jerry cans of diesel, it puts me up there. This truck tows it perfectly, it's sickening how the low end torque shows off on a half ton. Diesel forever.

How much weight are you towing?

We tow an Escape 5.0 fifth wheel. 5000 lbs max GVWR plus a generator and an extra 5 gallons of diesel in the bed of the truck. Just me and my wife. 18-19 mpg towing.
Wow! Sounds like a nice combo! Got any pictures of your rig together?

I love seeing these EcoDiesels with small 5th wheels!

The Escape fifth wheel is what I'm considering getting down the line. Since I got a longer warranty on my EcoD, I might spring for a hitch and use this truck before getting my bigger truck. I don't need some massive fifth wheel, and I don't like bumper tow TTs.

You're the first person with a 2020 that has reported a P00AF. I have a few questions. Did you buy the truck new? Is your truck still under the 5 year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty? What is the build date for your truck? Let us know what steps your dealer takes to remedy this issue.

So, based on having the first 2020 with a P00AF code any thoughts on the theory of Ram 1500 ecodiesel vehicle production quantities? I am going to guess that the number of Ram 1500s in the 2020 and 2023 model year are limited (Production issues in 2020 due to being a new model year/COVID, and 2023 production stopped in January. This would mean the largest number of Ram 1500 Gen3 ecodiesels on the road are 2021 and 2022 model years. So just due to sheer numbers we are seeing more 2021 and 2022 with failures (larger sample size) but it does not mean 2020 and 2023 are immune from the P00AF code.

On a related noted I was reading Star Case Number S210900010. This was released to ensure the recommended engine oil was being used in the Gen3 ecodiesels. It states: "Using the oil specified for the GEN 2 engine in the GEN 3, will lead to deposits forming in the turbo charger, leading to reduced performance." Any idea if using a non-recommended oils is resulting in seeing these P00AF cases? Briefly looking online it does not seem to be out of the realm of possible to have dirty turbo vanes resulting in the actuator to get stuck due to deposits and trigger a code. However, I would suspect that we would see a lot more 2020 Gen3 with the P00AF as it was not until the fall of 2020 that this Star Case was released to ensure dealership service centers corrected the issue and used the appropriate type of oil.

I'm hoping that @2020North can confirm whether or not his issue is related to the turbo.

@2020North has experienced what many others have experienced, so I have no reason to believe that it's not related to the turbo actuator. It would be nice to get a build date. As far as I know, it was built in December of 2020 and could have gotten the same batch of faulty actuators that the others got.

My 2020 was built on May 26th. That was before the part shortage. It's possible that different actuators were used during the parts shortage. As I've said before, my 2020 is a designated tow rig. It's towed a 7,000 lb travel trailer in mountainous terrain in New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. We've towed through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas multiple times. So far, it's never triggered a code.

Hey guys. Just stopping by to research something and saw this alert. First, I hope everyone is well! Second, though I no longer have the Ram, I heard from someone at the dealership that the engine had some major failure. The sales agent called me before that asking if I had done a delete on the truck, which I didn't. When I go in, I'll try to find out more. Engine was stock with a barely broken in turbo. I'm betting the hack mechanic who made the "first attempt" at replacing the turbo screwed something up.
Hey Everyone. I was at the dealer yesterday for the first oil change on my F350 and asked about the failure. I did confirm that there was a major failure and the truck never made it to the sales inventory but I could not get a definitive answer on the actual issue.

Hi everyone. Sorry for the absence. Made it back to Michigan with a total of 10 limp mode occurrences And then work started right up. Today was the first day the dealership could look at my truck. The tech responded that they are going to replace the turbo and the DPF under warranty. they say parts should be here in a few days and he expects it to be completed next week.

yes, bought truck new.

i have 4 months left on the powertrain warranty (currently at 70,700 miles) and this is covered.

Is the build date available from the VIN or just on the tag in the door? The truck is at the dealership for the next week until fixed.

per one of the questions above I have done all of the oil changes. The first time I brought it in for my free first oil change they wanted to use the Rotella even after I pointed out that it isn’t what the manual called for so I have always done them myself. I have used the Pennzoil Euro and the Quaker State Euro that meet the MS-1299? spec listed on the bottle. Pennzoil if I could get it on sale, otherwise the Quaker State.

@2020North -- Thanks for getting back to us! We understand! We are all busy people.

This is great information to know. I've been using the QuakerState Euro that meets the MS-12991. However, I bought my truck used, so who knows what was put through it. Chances are if done by a dealer, it could be Rotella or it could've been spec. Will never know, and that is one of the unknowns.

Have you ever done a used oil analysis on your oil?

In any event, you are getting essentially a second life on your truck, especially with the DPF. Sounds like they are rolling out the red carpet fixing your truck to make sure you don't come back an angry customer.

Oh, and you make me so jealous of your small fifth wheel. That is exactly what I want some day. :love:

It's located on the door jamb. It can be a little tricky to interpret. Feel free to take a photo and post it, then we'll decode it for you.

This is good news. I hope the new turbo will be the remedy. Did they say that was wrong with your DPF?

I thought the same thing about the second life. It got the new fuel pump and now a new turbo and DPF. I don’t know if my wife feels the same though.
I can understand your wife's frustration. The wiring harness that was installed incorrectly from the factory was a fluke. Unfortunately, it caused the driveshaft to wear through the wires. The turbo issue wasn't a fluke. It's a known issue, but it sounds like it was a quality control issue. I'm still confused about why they are placing your DPF. You didn't mention any issues with the DPF. My hope is that you have all the issues worked out and can enjoy the truck for many more years/miles. Keep us posted and let us know when you go on your next RV trip.

So a question for everyone. The truck got a new fuel pump earlier this year and now they’re replacing the turbo and the DPF. If I convince the wife to keep (or if I just am a good person to the next owner) the truck being that most of the sensitive parts are going to be new, is there anything I should have The tech replace while he has the body off of the truck that is a maintenance item coming up? The truck has about 71,000 miles on it right now. Is there anything around the hundred thousand mile maintenance mark that would be really easy to replace during this repair?
