Once this process is thoroughly ironed out, we need to create a single thread dedicated to reprogramming the ECU and then make it a "sticky". Tons of valuable info in this thread that eventually needs to be condensed into a single thread.
Oh what the heck, I'm not that busy today.... I pulled the info together as a sort of guide for those that have been asking. If anyone see anything I've missed let me know.

Only comment, maybe make it clearer that Original and Current VINs will not march. With the salvage GDE tuned ECU that I got they did match.
I got my 2nd 2015 ECU yesterday, everything went pretty much as you wrote. One mistake I made was trying to start the truck right after writing the VIN, it ran for 5 seconds and shutdown. Had to turn it off, let sit until everything turned off, then it started right back up.
Good job on the write-up

I believe the answer to be yes, but I have not had experience yet. My 3rd ECU is arriving today so maybe Friday the 13th will be my lucky day.

To complete this, you will need to make sure the “new” ECU will work with your truck. 2016 and newer have DEF quality sensors in the tank and if you install one of these in a 14 or 15, you will get a check engine light.

You need the AlfaOBD software and appropriate OBD adapter for whatever device you are running AlfaOBD on.

Once you have all of that, swap out the ECU, program your VIN and injector codes, clear any faults, and you should be good. You do not need to disconnect the battery to do the swap.

Good luck this Friday!

So has anybody installed a 2014 ECU in a 2016? Any codes regarding the DEF quality sensor if it's not even looking for one? If so, I may have a 2014 ECU I would trade for a 2016.
Yes, but in my case, no codes about quality sensor. The DEF gauge just plain does not work. I drove 200 miles on the 2014 in my 2016 and never saw the gauge move off zero or CEL's generate. Went back to my 2016 ECM and all was fine.

For those looking to pick up a used ecm as a spare and change vin and Injector codes with obd, which model years use compatible tunes?

I'm looking for a ecm for a 2014 so I believe that one from a my15 will also work but a 16 uses a different version and will throw a code, (is my17 the same as 16?)
Are Jeep oem tunes completely different?
I have the gde currently and don't want it overwritten

I have a 2014 one. Sending you a PM.

So from what I am seeing when you are creating an "emergency dealer visit" stock ecm with AlphaOBD you should find one that matches the year of your truck to avoid any gremlins.

Yes there is some cross over between years it seems, but to be safe matching years seems like the best thing to do.

Is it also important to find one with the same trim levels for options like Air suspension etc?

If I could just have the stock ECM sent to me by GDE loaded with a tune, I would be happy. That tune they sent is a clean tune but unfortunately does not have the GDE firmware loaded.

Need the EGR turned off.

Agreed, there's plenty on car-part.com
Easy to pick one up $250-$300

That's part of the "power down for at least 2 min". When you power up again the modules communicate to each other.
I put a tradesman ECU to mine (Larimie) and it complained about the air suspension till I did the power cycle.

3rd times the charm. ECU has the right VIN and no codes. As luck would have it, this thing looks brand new...too new. Check the VIN and the AEM has already been performed...why me.

Is that an issue for you? I assumed you were just looking for a backup ECM so you could swap ECM's for dealer visits and save your tune.

Yes, but also for them to install the AEM and warranty (no cash for me, Canadian truck). I don’t know the details, but I have heard from others that they send some sort of “before and after” data off to the mothership. Not sure what that is used for or if will affect the warranty or not.
